Canon T3i – Video Digital Zoom Function

In Feb. 2011 Canon launched the Rebel T3i.  Occasionally consumer level products offer a sneak peek at something which may filter up to pro gear in a more refined manner.  The T3i, or 600D depending on where you live has one such interesting feature. The feature in question is called Video Digital Zoom.  Now before you all yell BLEUGH …. digital zoom sucks… bare with me.  Yes in general digital zoom does suck so this feature comes with some caveats.  Unfortunately Canon has not provided any information on exactly how they are implementing this zoom mode so there is a

Sony launches the NEX FS 100 – S35 sized digital sensor video camera

We new it was coming, Sony teased some specs and initial design drawings of it many months ago but now we have a full spec sheet, price point and final production name for the NEX FS 100.  The Sony F3 was released just a few months ago, featuring a Super 35 sized digital sensor it was met with much acclaim but a $10,000 + price tag will keep it out of reach for many people.  With this new FS 100, Sony is aiming squarely at those filmmakers considering the Panasonic AF100 or a DSLR setup.  The FS 100 also features

New Canon lenses delayed due to Japanese earthquake disaster

Whilst this story pails in comparison to the severity of many of the other problems Japan is facing right now, those of you waiting for some of the newer Canon lenses are going to have to wait a little longer.  The 8-15mm fisheye zoom lens and the 300mm f2.8 MKII and 40mm f2.8 MKII were already delayed earlier on in the year and now face unknown delays due to the tragic disaster that hit the Eastern seaboard of Japan a few weeks ago.  The factory that manufacturers many of Canon’s lenses is located in Utsunomiya, if you have a lens

The Ultimate Wildlife Lens – Canon 200-400 F4 L IS USM EXTENDER 1.4×

The full press release for the Canon 200-400 first announcement can be found here.  I wanted to touch on a few further thoughts about what is an incredible lens.  For years Canon shooters complained about the old school style of the Canon 100-400 f4.5-5.6 L IS.  With it’s push pull design many people found that it sucked in dust and there were also large variations in the quality of them.  Sometimes you could get a great copy, and if you didn’t mind dealing with the odd zoom design you could make some great images with it.  Many wildlife photographers used

Canon T3i Vs. T3 (600D Vs.1100D) Which one is for you ?

It’s not very often that Canon announces multiple SLR cameras on the same day, and even rarer that the two place next to each other in the product lineup.  Canon just announced (FEB 2011) the new T3i and T3 DSLRS, also called the 600D and 1100D depending on whether you are in N.America  or Europe.  For the rest of the article I will refer to them using the N.American nomenclature of T3i and T3 but the European models are just the same! The consumer DSLR market has become incredibly competitive over the last few years especially with Sony flexing their

New Canon 200-400 f4 zoom lens!!!

Canon has today announced the development of a new 200-400mm f4 lens which will feature a built in 1.4 extender.  This is the lens of my dreams and one that Canon shooters have been waiting for for a very long time.  The build in 1.4 teleconverter is a huge feature that has never been seen before !  For a long time Nikon shooter has been using their 200-400mm f4 for sports and wildlife whilst Canon shooter have only really had the 100-400mm f4-5.6 L IS with it’s antiquated push pull zoom design.  People have speculated for a while that Canon

Canon Launches the 600D / T3i Digital SLR

Canon has today launched a new consumer SLR called the 600D (t3i) which sits directly below the 60D in their product lineup.  The specs of the camera are an incremental step up from the old 550D but a few ergonomic changes have been made and the vari-angle swiveling LCD that we saw on the 60D has also made an appearance.  It’s getting pretty crazy the sort of features that are trickling down from the high end cameras to the consumer level.  I fully expect this to be a fantastic camera that will meet and exceed many peoples photographic needs.  The

Phase One Announces 80 MP Digital Back

Phase One has released information on a new line of digital medium format backs today.  The new backs do not replace the P+ lineup, but sit above it as a higher level.  The 40, 60 and 80 megapixel backs feature several innovative new features like USB3 connectivity, 290 mil ppi high res LCD screen , Liveview and touch screen capabilities to name just a few.  $43,000 is a high price (for the IQ180) but this looks to be the best featured digital back available yet.  The 40 and 60MP versions are cheaper but still not “cheap” 🙂 Press Release Phase
