Cool! DJI Osmo Pocket – Tiny 3-Axis Stabilized Camera

DJI’s latest handheld gimbal, the Osmo Pocket,  costs just $349 and shoots 4K 60p video. It has a built-in touchscreen, a battery that lasts for two hours and an incredible variety of modes to shoot stabilized videos, motion timelapses, multi-row panoramic images and much more. You can even connect it to your mobile device and record video direct to the phone, whilst using the screen as a larger monitor. For the bloggers out there, there’s an optional accessory to connect a proper microphone, as well as an underwater housing and an adapter to mount it to your pre-existing collection of …

Drobo Launches the 8D. An 8-Bay Thunderbolt 3 Storage Solution

My primary photo storage device is a Drobo 5D3 which is a 5-bay Thunderbolt 3 enabled storage array. I also use a 5N2 NAS to mirror the 5D3 every night, and I keep an older Thunderbolt 2 5D unit at another physical location as a third backup. You could say I’m pretty invested in the Drobo systems, and having owned every version of them since the very first Firewire units nearly a decade ago, I pay close attention to new product launches. Today they launched the Drobo 8D, which is basically the bigger brother to the 5D3 that I’m currently …

Luminar Flash Sale: Lock In the Lowest Price Yet!

Sorry, this special offer has now ended.         Luminar from Skylum Software has been making waves in the world of photo editing software in the last year or so. Not only is it powerful, but it’s also incredibly fun and quick to use. You only have to take a look at my tutorial for adding sun rays to a photo in Luminar, to see how simple they have made it to add effects that would take ten times longer in something like Photoshop. This weekend they are having a flash sale to get Luminar for just …

Thoughts on Canon’s New 70-200mm Lenses and Their Surprising Price

Canon unveiled updated versions of their L-Series 70-200mm lenses this week and since these lenses have long been among the most popular in their lineup, I wanted to write some thoughts – good and bad – about this launch. First let’s take a look at what has been changed from the previous versions of these lenses: Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS III That’s it. The Mark II version of this lens was launched in 2009 and is extremely highly regarded, so Canon have definitely taken the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mentality with this lens update. The IS …

Sigma’s New 105mm f/1.4 Price Revealed…Wow!

I’m just getting caught up on all the latest photo news after a few weeks on the road. One of the things that jumped out at me right away is the price of Sigma’s new 105mm f/1.4 lens. The lens is available for order now at only $1599. Now don’t get me wrong, that’s not a cheap lens by any means, but for a lens of that size and aperture it’s a pretty killer deal and Sigma has been knocking it out of the park with lens design recently. Canon users didn’t have a 105mm f/1.4 until now, and whilst …

Think Tank Launches New Affordable Storyteller Bag Series

Think Tank Photo have a pretty steady stream of new product launches but this one caught my eye due to the low price points. The new Storyteller shoulder bag series features three bags, and prices start at just $64.75 for the Storyteller 5 and go up to $84.75 for the largest Storyteller 10 bag.   The bags look great for a mirrorless setup or a small DSLR with a couple or three lenses. All of them feature an elasticated water bottle pocket on one side, as well as mesh battery and memory card pockets inside the lid. The Storyteller 8 …

New Elinchrom Transmitter PRO = Skyport Plus HS

Elinchrom launched a battery flash system called the ELB500 TTL. As the name suggests, this is a TTL capable 500w/s portable strobe unit and it’s the first TTL unit that Elinchrom have produced.  I’ve used Elinchrom gear for many years, and currently have an ELB400 in my kit, along with the Skyport Plus HS, which handles the wireless control of the flash. Alongside the release of the ELB500, I noticed that they were also talking about a TTL capable transmitter called the Transmitter PRO. Confusingly, it appeared to look identical to the Skyport Plus HS and for a while I …

New SanDisk Extreme Portable SSDs Look Cool!

It looks like SSD pricing has really turned a corner this year and I’m seeing products that are less then half the price, and half the size of the ones that were on the market last year. G-Technology launched a series of small, USB-C enabled rugged SSDs, and now SanDisk has done the same thing with the Extreme Pro SSD. Since both SanDisk and G-Technology are both Western Digital companies, it’s entirely possible they contain the same drives, but the external styling is quite different. The SanDisk Extreme Pro SSD looks to be significantly thinner than the G-Technology equivalent, and …

LaCie DJI CoPilot Backup Device

I always keep one eye on announcements at the Consumer Electronics Show that rolls around in January every year. Whilst major camera launches tend to happen later in the calendar year, CES is often the place where exciting new peripherals are revealed, such as new hard drives and LCD monitors. This year the product that has got me most excited is the DJI CoPilot from LaCie/Seagate. The naming of this product is confusing though! Some people are referring to it as a Seagate product, and some people are referring to it as a LaCie product. LaCie is owned by Seagate, …
