The new Meizler module was teased a month or so back on RED’s website but at NAB the nearly finished product was on display.  At the RED booth it wasn’t possible to get up close to it but outside at the 3ality Technica booth they had one just sitting there all wired up and ready to play with.  It seems that not many people knew this and I only stumbled upon it in my final hours at the show.

So what’s this module all about then ?  Essentially it’s aim is to streamline your camera rig and remove a number of the additional boxes and adapters that necessarily hang off the side of most rigs on a big production.  You can pre-order soon for $13,000 and it should be shipping ‘this summer’.

What’s added ?

Internal trickery

  • Wireless video transmission in 1080p (this is not yet functioning in the module though according to Jarred Land or RED, it used the same technology that is in their stand alone wireless transmitter that was working on the stand).  You can view that module in my previous post.
  • Wireless timecode receiving.  Jam your timecode wirelessly from your sound guy.
  • Wireless audio receiver.  At the moment the only system that is confirmed to work with this is Zaxcom but apparently there are others.
  • Wireless lens control.  Currently compatible with Preston and 3ality controllers.  ARRI controllers are being worked on as well.

Physical ports

  • 1x 2B Lemo DSMC standard input power
  • 2x 2p 1B accessory power output
  • 1x 9p 1B Gig-E
  • 1x 10p 1B 232/422
  • 1x 4p 0B CAN
  • 1x HD-SDI video BNC
  • 1x genlock BNC
  • 1x timecode BNC
  • 1 x D-Tap output

What wasn’t immediately obvious to me when I saw the image on RED’s website was how the module extends out to the front of the camera.  As you can see in these profile shots it engulfs all of the rear connections on the brain and extends out to the front where three ports are positioned for focus, iris and zoom motors.  This almost certainly means that your current base plate will no longer provide the correct rod height so they will need to come up with a low profile plate system.  This is something that I only thought about when I was posting these pics and now that I look at it it seems that 3ality might have manufactured something to that nature already as you can see in the images above.

There is no way to add any other modules to the camera once the Meizler is added.  Here you can see the main bank of connections where the biggest disappointment is the lack of a second RED monitor/EVF port.  Still no way to use both the touch screen and the EVF at the same time, or two RED monitors.  If you want a second monitor and also need to pass a signal to video village then you’ll have to pass it through your on camera monitor as there is still just the one HD-SDI port as well.

Focus, iris and zoom motors plug into the front and audio cables can be wired through the base.

The left panel features a remote socket for wiring in the Redmote.

Lots of wireless going on here.  Whilst the module is apparently in use on several sets already I did have some issues with the receiving.  Standing only 1 or 2 feet from the camera occasionally the focus would now work with the remote.  Seems like there is still some bugs to be worked out but when they are, this will transform the ease of use of the Epic when it’s on a crane or being flown with a steadicam with your 1st AC working wirelessly. I think this will become a must-have accessory for larger Epic productions.

Works with Preston and 3ality controllers at the moment.  More manufacturers are planned in the future.

RED announced a barrage of new products at NAB last week, including the details of the much anticipated Dragon sensor upgrade.  For $6000, Epic owners will be able to upgrade their current sensors to a 6k sensor which will also offer improvements in dynamic range.

Lots of mount options out there now with Nikon and Leica having been added to the lineup.  I was able to briefly try out one of the first Leica mounts with a Noctilux 50mm lens one evening, it is quite bizarre to have such a small lens on such a big camera but to have the option at all is pretty neat.  Feature application is pretty limited due to the inability to add any kind of follow focus though but for hand held travel shooting it would be a lot of fun.

The Pro IO module is ‘shipping soon’ for $3750.  These are all the Is and Os on this one side, these are no more on the other side.  It’s quite bulky really and you’ll need to add a module adapter to it to allow you to put it onto the camera body as well as you can see in the next picture.

Unlike the continual patent infringement bickering between the major player in the mobile industry, the digital cinema and even photographic industry is a lot quieter on the legal front.  This week though a story of Hollywood proportions is beginning to unfold when it was revealed that ARRI’s ex VP of Market Development Michael Bravin has pleaded guilty to hacking into the e-mail account of a rival camera company called Band Pro Film and Digital, a company with close ties to RED Digital Cinema.  Mr Bravin is an ex employee of Band Pro and in his plea agreement filed last week with a US District Court, Mr Bravin admitted to intentionally accessing the account belonging to Band Pro’s CEO, Amnon Band and has been sentenced to 2 weeks in jail.

RED’s CEO Jim Jannard has always been a participant in RED’s online community at RedUser.net and as this news broke he commented on the site:

Unfortunately, this will get messy. Not what anyone would vote for. Certainly not me…. The more I know… the more sad I get. “Significant” does not begin to describe the facts. I am heartbroken.  One of the companies I held in the highest esteem now has left me shattered.  The magnitude of the betrayal is really hard to comprehend.  The situation forces a reaction that I never would have considered a possibility.

Initially it was not clear how much this was going to affect RED and whether any legal action would be a necessity but today he followed this with:

After getting a full update from my attorney on all that went on the past couple of years, I need to take a few days off.

After 36 years of doing business, I have never seen such a thing… and I have seen quite a lot.

This was followed quickly by Jim’s right hand man, Jarred Land, correcting another commenter on a post who had asked if ARRI was Suing RED.  Jarred simply replied:

You have that backwards…..

Jim has had to be involved in hundreds of lawsuits. He has never lost. Not one. With companies 100x larger than Arri.

I’m certain that many more facts will soon come out in the wash and we’ll begin to get a better idea for the scale of this situation.  Judging by RED’s reaction, they are deeply involved in this despite the fact that the hacked account was that of one of their partners and not theirs directly.  Do ARRI now know all of RED’s future plans ?  This could possibly affect the development and release of new products by ARRI if it’s proven that they are based on knowledge that was obtained in such a clandestine manner.  I’m not a legal expert though so we’ll have to wait until a little more information is revealed but given Michael Bravin’s guilty plea I would not like to be in ARRI’s shoes right now.  RED has become a force to be reckoned with in the digital video and cinema industry, this could get very ugly!

Red announced today that the long awaited Canon mount for their EPIC cameras will begin shipping on September 9th to the first people who pre-ordered them.  Further orders are being taken now for a price of $2000.  The mount itself is machined out of solid titanium and features a safe locking ring to further solidify the connection between camera and lens.  Right out of the gate it looks as though they have firmware programmed to work with a majority of Canon lenses, with more to be added very shortly (and some third party ones like Sigma).

When a supported lens is attached to the camera the user will have full iris control, image stabilization and focus control via the Epic itself or the Redmote.  The touch screen will also provide touch-to-focus capability, something which is not yet been seen on Canon cameras.  Early demos of the mount also showed an ability to rack focus between two defined points on the touch screen.  Given the small size of a RED Epic, the Canon L lenses look to be a great match.  In my mind they are undoubtedly sharp enough for this application so it’s going to open up a whole new world.  I will be posting a hands on with an Epic and a Canon mount hopefully in September where myself and Charlie Grinnell will put his camera through it’s paces with my set of Canon lenses from 8-15mm fisheye right up to the 300mm f2.8 L IS.  Can’t wait to give this a try so stay tuned !

If anyone in Vancouver area is looking to rent an Epic please contact me via e-mail.

Now granted this is not a lens that many people outside of rental houses can afford but I couldn’t resist taking a look at it.  Angenieux cine zooms are acknowledged as amongst the best PL mount zooms in the business, if not THE best.  Lightweight (relatively speaking) and compact they are a hit with many DPs.  This week at NAB sees the introduction of the new 45-120mm t2.8 Optimo zoom which will set you back a whopping $55,000.  If you’ve never held or felt a proper cine zoom then you are probably wandering how it can be worth that much money.  These things are made to a standard that you can’t even begin to imagine until you see and feel it for yourself, truly incredible.  They had it mounted to a Red Epic and it was a perfect match for size and weight, fantastic for a steadycam rig.

They also have 1.3x and 2x teleconverters/extenders to go with it for approx $4000 each! (Pictured below)

There was a lot of hype about Red’s morning announcement and in the end it turned out to be a bit unexpected and less groundbreaking than their usual announcements.  Part of this is no doubt down to Jim Jannard’s vow to keep info under their hat’s until a little closer to launch time given the moving release dates and changing specs that have happened with all their other products in the past.

This morning it was announced that the first Monstro sensor was in testing and it’s called Red Dragon.  The current sensor lineup is called Mysterium, Monstro will be the next generation.  No details were given about the sensor at all, nada, zip, nothing.  Shame.  All that was said was that it will be an available upgrade to Epic.  i.e you won’t need to buy a new camera, just send it in for a new sensor which is sweet.  Red Ted also mentioned that they are working on their own Red 4k Projector and that they have an iPad app to control their cameras remotely.  So no big announcement really, but a few smaller ones that are still pretty cool.

Red Scarlet Fixed Lens

It seems that they are still not ready to take orders for Epic -X or Scarlet in it’s fixed lens configuration.  They did have several Scarlets on hand though and I had a chance to play with one.  The fixed lens feels bomb proof and is very small.  Overall it feels pretty much just like an Epic , there’s some photos below.  They also displayed what appeared to be a consumer version of Red Ray, through there was no info on it and they seemed unsure what to tell me about it….I had a good play with all the new DSMC gear like shoulder mounts and EVF holders etc and it’s quality stuff as you would expect, though some of it was a bit bulky for my liking if you want to keep a small tight rig.  The I/O module for Epic was also on hand with HDSDI input output and XLR etc etc.

Band Pro and RED have announced that they will be teaming up to bring a pre-packaged RED Epic setup including 5 of the new Leica Summilux Cine lenses.  I had a chance to check these lenses out this morning and I can’t think of a better combination.  The Epic is so small that putting a Zeiss Master Prime on it looks pretty crazy, but the Leica Cine lenses are also small and seem like a perfect partnership to the Epic to maintain the portable size.  No info yet on exact pricing, configuration or availability of these packages but you can bet it’s not for a looooong time as demand for these on their own is outpacing production.

Here’s some shots of the beautiful Leica Summilux Cine lenses on various cameras including the EPIC.
