Gear Check: Canon EF 400mm f/2.8 L IS III

In 2018 Canon launched an updated EF 400mm f/2.8 that shaved 26% off the weight of the previous version, bringing it down to a relatively svelte 2840g. Ok, that’s still quite heavy, but it’s 1KG lighter than the 400mm f/2.8 L IS II, and 2.5KG lighter than the original 400mm f/2.8 L IS. Having spent some time with this lens now, I thought I’d offer up some initial thoughts on what can certainly be thought of as the flagship lens in the Canon EF L-Series lineup. The Good This lens is not a whole lot heavier than the lightweight EF

Canon Canada Prices Increase On April 1st – Buy Now!

This news has been floating around for some time now, but in case you haven’t seen it, prices for Canon lenses will be increasing on April 1st due to the weakness of the Canadian Dollar.  It’s likely that cameras will also increase in price as well, although the quoted price of the recently announced 1-DX Mark II will remain as announced, and explains why the price seemed quite high when it was first revealed. Canon have not said exactly how much prices will be increasing, but it appears to be between 10-20%. If you’ve been thinking of picking up a lens

Canon’s White Unicorn – 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS II Finally Unveiled

After 16 years, Canon has finally launched a replacement for the original 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 L IS and on the face of it, it looks to have been worth the wait.  Gone is the “dust pump” push-pull zoom design that so many people despised from the original.  The Mark II lens features a typical zoom ring, but add a new variable friction control that we’ve not seen before on Canon lenses.  As you can see in the images, a central ring labelled Smooth<<—–>> Tight, now controls the amount of friction on the extension of the zoom.  The overall design is reminiscent

[LEAK] Canon’s New 100-400 Is Finally Coming

It seems like eons that people have been waiting for this lens!  Finally a replacement for the push-pull design of the old version.  Looks like this lens will be coming out within the next few weeks and it would be a perfect partner to the Canon 7D MKII. The design is very reminiscent of the excellent 70-300 L IS. No pricing information yet. Via Canon Rumours

Canon 7D MkII Vs 70D

The Canon EOS 7D MkII was launched in September 2014, a full 5 years after the original version.  With little competition in the “semi-pro” APS-C camera market, Canon decided to release a major firmware update for the 7D in August 2012 that effectively extended the camera’s life to the MkII announcement in 2014 by adding key features and increasing the buffer capabilities.  On the other hand, the XXD line of cameras has stuck to the regular release cycle and we’ve seen the 60D and the 70D launch within the 7D’s lifetime. In this article I want to delve into the

Canon 7D MkII Leaked With New 400mm And New Pancake Lens

Ahead of the widely assumed Monday announcement of the long-awaited Canon 7D MkII, photos and a supposedly confirmed spec list have appeared on several rumour websites.  Alongside the 7D MKII, Canon look set to launch a new version of the 400mm f/4 DO IS as well as an EF-S 24mm f/2.8 pancake and a 24-105 f/3.5-5.6. After years of wild speculation on the 7D’s specs, there isn’t really anything surprising about them at all.  A Canon DSLR finally gets the ability to record 1080p at 60fps though, they added an intervalometer for timelapse and they included GPS in the camera.

Canon EOS-M Half Price !!

Ok this might just be the craziest deal I have ever seen from B&H Photo.  The Canon EOS-M with the 22mm pancake lens is $299.  That’s 50% off! Now I personally own one of these cameras and I can tell you that this is real steal.  It produces wonderful images with its APS-C sensor and the AF has been upgraded last week with magic new firmware to make it so much faster.  I’m glad to be able to show you guys this deal, but I wish it had cost me that little when I purchased mine!!

Canon 70D Vs 7D

This is going to be a question that gets asked over and over again so let’s dig into it! In July 2013 Canon launched the EOS 70D, slated for shipping in September 2013.  Nearly four years previous to this, the 7D was launched as Canon’s premium, pro-sumer APS-C DSLR.  The Launch price of the 7D was far far higher than that of the 70D but as time has gone on, the price has fallen and they are all but the same price now as the 70D when it hits store shelves.  The question “which one to buy” is going to

Canon Announces The EOS 70D

Canon has unveiled the latest in their XXD lineup today with the launch of the 70D.  It features a 20.2 megapixel APS-C sensor with their new Digic 5+ (3x faster than Digic 5) chip that will allow up to 7fps continuous shooting.  As well as sensor advancements, Canon have also introduced a new auto focus system which has an impressive 19pt array with all points being the more accurate cross-type variety.  An all cross type AF system is unique at this time.  On top of this the maximum iso is boosted to 12,800 (up from 6400 on the 60D) and
