Pre-Orders Being Taken For New Canon Primes – 24mm and 28mm with IS

Launched some months ago, we are now nearing delivery of the new Canon 24mm and 28mm primes with IS.  I had a chance to try out both of these lenses at a Canon event in Vancouver earlier in the year.  Read this write up for my first impressions and some sample images.  I think when these lenses were fist announced the whole community let out a collective huh?  Non-L primes with IS and f2.8 ?  Well that is the way I certainly felt until I got my hands on them.  They are built very nicely, not quite L-quality but close.

B&H & Adorama Now Taking Pre-Orders For Canon’s Latest Super Telephoto Lenses – 500mm and 600mm

Following this mornings announcement from Canon that the new 500mm and 600mm lenses were now beginning to ship to dealers in Europe, B&H has updated their site to allow pre-orders of these two exciting new lenses.  This usually only happens when items are expected to arrive in stock relatively soon.  There’s a lot of buzz around what look likely to be Canon’s sharpest ever lenses and with people having to have waited more than a year for these to finally come to market I would expect demand to be relatively high initially for such a high priced item.  If you

Canon Announces That New 500mm and 600mm Lenses Are Now Shipping

UPDATE: B&H is now offering both of these lenses for pre-order.  They typically only do this when things get relatively close to arriving. Finally!!  After many delays, the lenses that were announced more than a year ago are now “shipping to selected dealers in Europe” according to Canon CPN.  No word yet on N.American dealers but I would expect to hear any time soon.  This comes just one day after hearing that the first of the Canon 1D X cameras are also starting to ship to select photographers covering Euro 2012 and the London Olympics.  Is Canon finally getting back

To Users of the EF200mm f/2L IS USM and EF800mm f/5.6L IS USM Lenses with the Canon EOS 5D Mark III Digital SLR Camera.

The Canon EOS 5D Mark III Digital SLR Camera does not need to be repaired as a result of this phenomenon.

Canon Brings 4K To The Cinema EOS Lineup With 2 New Cameras – C500 and EOS-1D C + Lenses

In the week proceeding the 2012 NAB show in Las Vegas, Canon have unveiled two brand new Cinema EOS cameras that take their new line right into the world of 4k video capture.  The C500 will build on the platform that the C300 launched on back in November 2011 but offer RAW 4k recording via 3G HD-SDI output and up to 120fps at 10 bit and 60fps at 12 bit. Back then I interviewed one of the technical developers from Canon and it was immediately obvious that this was just the beginning for them.  I don’t think that anyone would

Canon Launches A New Specialist Camera – EOS 60Da

Canon have just launched another one of their specialist astophotography cameras providing “a modified infrared filter and a low-noise sensor with heightened hydrogen-alpha sensitivity”.  Given that this isn’t the first astro camera that Canon have launched there must be a market for it I guess!  It’s pretty cool that they would make such a specialist product though.

If this is your thing then B&H have the camera ready for pre-order already.

Canon 24-70 f2.8 L II Availability Slips To July ?

UPDATE: This has now been confirmed by Canon themselves via their website. They also confirmed the 1DX is delayed until mid-June.  Why can’t they figure out timelines recently ?  The 5DIII launched on time and in impressive numbers, it seems that was a huge exception. Disappointingly (and once again) one of Canon’s most anticipated new lens releases seems to have slipped down the time line.  Initial reports had it shipping on April 17th but upon inquiring to my local camera store about CPS pricing, the local Canon rep informed the store that this lens will not ship until July! Pearstone Duo Battery Charger Review

One of the things that I was happy to see at the launch of the Canon 5D MKIII was that they have kept the venerable LP-E6 battery that was first introduced more than three years ago with the MKII.  I’ve always been amazed at it’s capacity and in the last few years several third party accessory manufacturers have also adopted it for powering video equipment accessories such as LCD monitors of external video recorders.  Of course it’s also been used in the 7D and 60D!  In other words, if you are a Canon shooter then the chances are you have

The Canon 5D Mark III Is Finally Here!

Is this the most anticipated camera launch of all time ?  It would not surprise me at all.  The often rumored and much speculated Canon 5D Mark III is finally announced.  Three and a half years ago the 5D Mark II changed our expectations as to what a DSLR could do.  It delivered not only stunning image quality and Canon’s best low-light performance yet, but also 1080P video from an imaging sensor that was physically bigger than even any Hollywood camera. The results demonstrated by people like Vincent Laforet, changed the low to middle end production industry for good.  Even
