Interview with Mylio

Mylio is a company that makes organizational software for photographers.  Full disclosure: I’ve never used it, so this isn’t meant in any way to be an endorsement of their product or service. They did want to interview me about my photography, though, and you can now read the interview on the Mylio website here.

How Has Camera Technology Evolved During My Career?

Recently the good folks from a new camera company called Light, got in touch with me and asked me an interesting question. They wondered how technology changes have played a part in my career as it evolved over the last few years. What a great question! Let’s see shall we…

Adobe Lightroom 6.3 Now Available

Adobe made Lightroom 6.3 available today and there’s several important things to note about it.  Whilst it adds the usual array of new RAW support for newer cameras, it also adds a ton of new lens profiles for lenses like the new Zeiss Milvus range, as well as the Canon 400mm f/4 DO II. As well as performance improvements, Adobe have also reverted to the original import dialog after making sweeping changes in version 6.2.  Most people seem to prefer the original import dialog and they have listened to feedback and acted quickly to bring it back.  Creative Cloud members …

Behind the Shot: Blood Moon Rising

Canon 5D Mark III with Canon 200-400 f/4 A Blood Moon is the name given to a specific type of lunar eclipse where The Moon turns a dramatic orange colour at the point of total eclipse.  A so-called Super Moon is a full moon that occurs at the point in The Moon’s orbit where it is closest to The Earth. In 2015, these two events coincided with each other to produce a “Blood Super Moon”, something which won’t happen again until 2033! I’ve previously shared a tutorial I created on how to shoot a lunar eclipse, and I set out again this …

Every now and again a nice new lens comes along, but it’s rare for an entire range of lenses to be launched simultaneously unless it’s for a new mount.  Zeiss surprised a lot of people this week with the launch of the new Milvus lens lineup which included 6 new lenses as follows: Zeiss Milvus 21mm f/2.8 ZE Zeiss Milvus 35mm f/2 ZE Zeiss Milvus 50mm f/1.4 ZE Zeiss Milvus 50mm f/2 ZE Zeiss Milvus 85mm f/1.4 ZE Zeiss Milvus 100mm f/2 ZE They certainly look the part, and Zeiss’ recent offerings have been very well received.  It’ll also be interesting …

For the love of photography, learn new things

Learning to climb: Day 1. Tacking a 5.8 called Big Wuss near Whistler, BC. Photo: Rowan Thornton   I’ve always maintained that one of the things I love most about photography is that you are never truly ‘done’.  There can be no end to creation and art. Once you commit to going down this path, you’re in it for life in some way or other. There’s always new techniques to explore, and your style will change and mature over time. A couple of years ago I’d never aimed a lens at an animal before, but Instagram opened my eyes to …
