Canon Launches a New Camcorder with the Vixia HF G10

For CES 2011 Canon has taken the wraps off of a new video camera called the HF G10. They updated their entire lineup of video cameras but this is the top of the line and one that interests me more than the others. Unfortunately it’s not a large sensor DSLR style video camera as everyone is probably hoping for. Canon seems to be dragging their heals in that department. We can learn a few things about the future from the details of this camera though! Here is a rundown of the important specs What it does NOT have I only …

Some Predictions For The Photography Industry in 2011

Last week I went through 10 new years resolutions for 2011 and today I want to put down some predictions for how 2011 will shape up. I haven’t done this before, but if nothing else it’ll be fun to look back on in a years time! None of this stuff is based on any secret inside sources that I have , just pure conjecture based on readily available information and my knowledge of the industry. Nikon Nikon will certainly release a mirroless interchangeable lens camera sometime in Q2 or Q3 this year. We have seen many patents filed for such …

Fujifilm Finepix X100 preview

Fujifilm’s X100 was first revealed at Photokina in 2010 and it’s retro styling instantly captured peoples attention. The X100 has yet to hit store shelves but Fujifilm has been slowly releasing more and more information about this camera to tantalize prospective buyers. Sadly this is a hands-off preview, I have not yet used one of these cameras in person but since we still don’t know exactly when this camera will come onto the market I thought I’d write a little about what we already know of the camera. The important specifications: These are the main specs that get me pretty …

RED Epic finally in the hands of film makers

RED’s new flagship camera, the Epic has finally started to ship in limited quantities. A few months ago RED announced that a limited number of hand machined and hand assembled Epics would be available slightly before the regular production run begins. The so called Epic-M was available to order for $58,000 and that package included a 5″ touch screen, the Bomb EVF and a 128 GB SSD module + a Redmote. Overall, the premium for getting one of these limited hand assembled versions is about $10,000 but people jumped at the opportunity and the very first one shipped to OFFHOLLYWOOD …

These things usually only come up for order when they know they will be shipping fairly soon so this is a good indication that the new MKIII Extenders (teleconverters) will be hitting stores soon. Originally slated for a December release it seems this may slip to January. B&H has them up for order now Canon Extender EF 1.4X III Canon Extender EF 2X III I wrote about these when they were announced earlier in the year at Photokina.

Panasonic GH-2 1:1 video mode is VERY interesting!

The Panasonic GH-2 is just starting to trickle onto the market from some of the major retailers and several people are reporting the discovery of a quite remarkable feature that Panasonic didn’t think to tell anyone about. A feature so good that many people are saying it “changes everything again”. At very least , it’s a headlining feature for people wanting to shoot video with the GH-2 and it is utterly puzzling as to why Panasonic is not flaunting this feature as one of it’s major selling points. So what is this feature I’m going on about ? Well, tucked …

ThinkTank launches new long lens rain cover

NOTE: There is now a newly updated, improved and cheaper version of this rain cover. Details can be found here. Think Tank Photo have just launched a re-designed version of their Hydrophobia 300-600 rain cover. The name is a little deceptive though as you can easily use this on a Canon 800mm f5.6 lens too using the included cover extender. Think Tank make some great rain covers and you can check out my review of the small Hydrophobia 70-200 HERE. The great thing about the design of this is that it stays on the lens even when it’s not raining, …

Panasonic launches the GF2 Micro Four Thirds camera

Panasonic has today launched the new GF2 Micro Four Thirds camera to supersede their popular GF1 model. The MFT (Micro Four Thirds) standard has been gaining market position quickly over the last couple of years and Panasonic’s cameras have been at the forefront of this popularity boom. The previous G models (G1, GH1, GF1) were very popular and well received by the press in general. At Photokina in September Panasonic too the wraps off the new DMC-GH2 and initial reports of that camera have found image quality and autofocus speed to be of excellent quality. When the original GF1 was …

Canon delays three of its new lenses until March 2011

Canon has announced today that three of its highly anticipated new lenses have been delayed until March 2011. The 300mm f2.8 L IS II , the 400mm f2.8 L IS II and the 8-15mm f4 L fisheye zoom. The lenses have been delayed due to changes in the manufacturing process. I’m personally most disappointed with the fisheye zoom as I plan to purchase that lens immediately and arriving in March it will miss most of my winter work where it would have been very useful.

Apple launches the tiny 11.6″ Macbook Air – How will it work for traveling photogs ?

Apple has this morning launched a new Macbook in their lineup, the 11.6″ and Macbook Air. The Macbook Air in itself is nothing new, it has been around for for a few years though I have yet to meet anyone that actually uses one. The similarly sized and better specc’d, cheaper 13″ Macbook Pro was always a no-brainer when choosing between the two. Apple has addressed this today with the introduction of the smaller 11.6″ Macbook Air. Much thinner and much smaller than a 13″ Macbook Pro you can begin to see some advantage to this solution if you are …

Zacuto joins the EVF party and announces the Z-Finder EVF

Well that didn’t take long…. only days after Redrock Micro showed their new Micro EVF, Zacuto has also shown a new EVF solution for DSLR movie making. Estimated price will be $775 and they are expected to be available in Feb 2011 in limited numbers. So maybe you can get one in 5 or 6 months time. For me it is getting somewhat frustrating that these companies are announcing products so far in advance of availability just so they can be “first”. They use the words limited availability so for many people it sounds like it could be 6 months …
