Travel Tip : Traveling With Pelican Cases

Today I have a quick tip for you if you are going to travel with camera equipment in Pelican cases. These types of cases provide excellent protection for any gear that needs to travel in the hold of the aircraft, but people know that expensive equipment lies within. They can become a target for theft and also draw time consuming attention from customs officials who want to see what you have in the case. My solution for this issue is a simple one, simply place my Pelican case inside a large duffel bag. The one I use came from Eddie …

5D MK3 & Canon Wireless Flash System

I’ve just taken delivery of my own Canon 5D MK3 and also the new 600 EX RT flash with ST-E3 Radio trigger. I’m really excited to try these things out on some upcoming shoots. I made a quick video yesterday with some first impressions on the flash and the new trigger. Stay tuned for more in-depth thoughts in the coming days and weeks.

Canon Launches A New Specialist Camera – EOS 60Da

Canon have just launched another one of their specialist astophotography cameras providing “a modified infrared filter and a low-noise sensor with heightened hydrogen-alpha sensitivity”. Given that this isn’t the first astro camera that Canon have launched there must be a market for it I guess! It’s pretty cool that they would make such a specialist product though. If this is your thing then B&H have the camera ready for pre-order already. Full Press Release NEW CANON EOS 60Da DSLR CAMERA FOR ASTRONOMY ENTHUSIASTS CAPTURES THE TRUE COLORS OF THE COSMOS LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., April 3, 2012 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., …

Canon 24-70 f2.8 L II Availability Slips To July ?

UPDATE: This has now been confirmed by Canon themselves via their website. They also confirmed the 1DX is delayed until mid-June. Why can’t they figure out timelines recently ? The 5DIII launched on time and in impressive numbers, it seems that was a huge exception. Disappointingly (and once again) one of Canon’s most anticipated new lens releases seems to have slipped down the time line. Initial reports had it shipping on April 17th but upon inquiring to my local camera store about CPS pricing, the local Canon rep informed the store that this lens will not ship until July! A …

Pearstone Articulating Arm Review

This is one of those multifunctional accessories that every photographer should have in their kit box. I’ve owned several different versions from various manufacturers and this time I have been provided with the 4.2″ Pearstone Articulating Israeli Arm version. My favorite uses of such an arm are to hold accessories for DSLR movie making such as microphones, audio recorders and LCD screens but the actual potential uses are far too numerous to name. The 4.2″ Pearstone version is just the right size for mounting on the hot shoe of your camera and it comes with a hot shoe adapter that …

Pearstone Duo Battery Charger Review

One of the things that I was happy to see at the launch of the Canon 5D MKIII was that they have kept the venerable LP-E6 battery that was first introduced more than three years ago with the MKII. I’ve always been amazed at it’s capacity and in the last few years several third party accessory manufacturers have also adopted it for powering video equipment accessories such as LCD monitors of external video recorders. Of course it’s also been used in the 7D and 60D! In other words, if you are a Canon shooter then the chances are you have …

The Canon 5D Mark III Is Finally Here!

Is this the most anticipated camera launch of all time ? It would not surprise me at all. The often rumored and much speculated Canon 5D Mark III is finally announced. Three and a half years ago the 5D Mark II changed our expectations as to what a DSLR could do. It delivered not only stunning image quality and Canon’s best low-light performance yet, but also 1080P video from an imaging sensor that was physically bigger than even any Hollywood camera. The results demonstrated by people like Vincent Laforet, changed the low to middle end production industry for good. Even …

Pocketwizard Launches the Plus III

LPA Designs have today announced the third iteration of the Pocketwizard Plus lineup. It integrates several of the features of the Multimax into a smaller, cheaper package that will actually sell for $30 less than the previous version! Great news! There has been considerable physical design changes too including a built in antenna and a sideways profile so as not to get in the way of the photographers view when mounted to the camera. There is a new long range mode designed for remote camera usage, a repeater function (which was previously confined to the Multimax), 32 channels and a …
