Red Announces First Monstro Sensor – Red Dragon + Red @NAB Photos

There was a lot of hype about Red’s morning announcement and in the end it turned out to be a bit unexpected and less groundbreaking than their usual announcements. Part of this is no doubt down to Jim Jannard’s vow to keep info under their hat’s until a little closer to launch time given the moving release dates and changing specs that have happened with all their other products in the past. This morning it was announced that the first Monstro sensor was in testing and it’s called Red Dragon. The current sensor lineup is called Mysterium, Monstro will be …

Leica/ Band Pro and RED Teaming up to Bring EPIC Package

Band Pro and RED have announced that they will be teaming up to bring a pre-packaged RED Epic setup including 5 of the new Leica Summilux Cine lenses. I had a chance to check these lenses out this morning and I can’t think of a better combination. The Epic is so small that putting a Zeiss Master Prime on it looks pretty crazy, but the Leica Cine lenses are also small and seem like a perfect partnership to the Epic to maintain the portable size. No info yet on exact pricing, configuration or availability of these packages but you can …

New Marshall LCD Monitors Make An Appearance at NAB

I’ve previously covered information on these new LCD monitors right HERE but here at NAB Marshall had prototype units on display. The casing design may change slightly , there are very much proto builds but the functionality of them was all in place. I think these will be the go-to monitors for HDSLR shooting when they hit production at the end of May. HDMI loop-through is great and the modular output allows HDSDI and even HDMI to HDSDI conversion using existing modules from Marshall’s range. The user configurable nobs and buttons mean that you can select all your favorite functions …

Canon T3i – Video Digital Zoom Function

In Feb. 2011 Canon launched the Rebel T3i. Occasionally consumer level products offer a sneak peek at something which may filter up to pro gear in a more refined manner. The T3i, or 600D depending on where you live has one such interesting feature. The feature in question is called Video Digital Zoom. Now before you all yell BLEUGH …. digital zoom sucks… bare with me. Yes in general digital zoom does suck so this feature comes with some caveats. Unfortunately Canon has not provided any information on exactly how they are implementing this zoom mode so there is a …

The Sony F3 was released just a few months ago, featuring a Super 35 sized digital sensor it was met with much acclaim but a $10,000 + price tag will keep it out of reach for many people. With this new FS 100, Sony is aiming squarely at those filmmakers considering the Panasonic AF100 or a DSLR setup. The FS 100 also features …

Whilst this story pails in comparison to the severity of many of the other problems Japan is facing right now, those of you waiting for some of the newer Canon lenses are going to have to wait a little longer. The Ultimate Wildlife Lens – Canon 200-400 F4 L IS USM EXTENDER 1.4×

The full press release for the Canon 200-400 first announcement can be found here. I wanted to touch on a few further thoughts about what is an incredible lens. For years Canon shooters complained about the old school style of the Canon 100-400 f4.5-5.6 L IS. With it’s push pull design many people found that it sucked in dust and there were also large variations in the quality of them. Sometimes you could get a great copy, and if you didn’t mind dealing with the odd zoom design you could make some great images with it. Many wildlife photographers used …

Canon T3i Vs. T3 (600D Vs.1100D) Which one is for you ?

It’s not very often that Canon announces multiple SLR cameras on the same day, and even rarer that the two place next to each other in the product lineup. Canon just announced (FEB 2011) the new T3i and T3 DSLRS, also called the 600D and 1100D depending on whether you are in N.America or Europe. For the rest of the article I will refer to them using the N.American nomenclature of T3i and T3 but the European models are just the same! The consumer DSLR market has become incredibly competitive over the last few years especially with Sony flexing their …
