Photography Tips for Skier Magazine

I was asked to create a series of ski photography tips to feature in Skier Magazine. Here you can see a selection from that series as published.

World cup bobsled in my home town

I don’t often get to post photos of what I’m currently shooting because much of it has to stay under wraps until the clients have used them in the magazines or adverts. This weekend though I have my photojournalism hat on in my home town of Whistler, BC. The bobsled and skeleton world cup is here for the first round of the winter season at the Whistler Sliding Center that hosted the event for the 2010 Winter Olympics. Here is a photo from lasts nights 2-man bobsled event. Canada 1 bob piloted by Lyndon Rush grabbed joint second place in …

SBC Skier cover shot of Dane Tudor

As a photographer there is very little that is more satisfying than walking into your local grocery store and seeing one of your images adorn the cover of your favorite ski magazine. When the issue in question is also the special 10th anniversary edition of the magazine it is even better! This photo of Dane Tudor was shot in Haines, Alaska while I was up there last spring time shooting alongside the Poorboyz Productions crew. You can read all about my trip in this post HERE. The line that Dane is skiing was one that he had his eye on …

New print available – Tree Skier

I have a new limited edition print available so I thought I would post up some shots of one already printed up and framed. This is a photo of Austin Ross skiing across a fallen tree in Whistler, BC. This example is printed at 24″ x 16″ on archival photo rag and then sprayed with an archival spray on top to keep it looking perfect for a very very long time! The printing is done by a company who I consider to be the best professional printers in Vancouver. I can ship anywhere and shipping is charged at cost. If …

Ad for Atomic Skis

This is an ad for Atomic Skis that I shot in Alaska last spring time. It was shot with a Canon 1DMKIV and a 300mm f2.8 L IS with a 1.4 teleconverter on it. The helicopter dropped me off on an opposite ridge to the line the guys were skiing on so I was quite some distance away. The skier in the shot is professional freeskier Tim Durtchi and the guys from Poorboyz Productions were also on hand to film the action for their movie Revolver. I knew Tim was going to do this trick off the cliff so I …

Whistler Blackcomb ad campaign – Part 2

The second part of the 2010/11 year Whistler Blackcomb ad campaign was shot back in April. I wrote about the first part HERE a couple of weeks ago. This time it was not specifically the mountains that were the subject, but the snowboarders that use it. This photo was to be used for the advertising in the major snowboard magazines around the world so we teamed up with some of the best riders out there. The Sandbox film crew came in with a few riders to film for their new snowboard movie called Now You Know and Red Bull brought …

Whistler Blackcomb ad campaign – Part 1

As winter gets a little closer every day, the ski magazines begin to hit the shelves again. Always an exciting time of year for me as I begin to see the fruits of my labor from last season. The first one I’m posting up here was just published in Powder Magazine (though Australian readers may have seen it a few months ago in some mags over there too). This is the first in a series of ads that I shot in the spring time for the ski resort Whistler Blackcomb. Some of you will recognize Whistler as one of the …

DVD Cover – Poorboyz REVOLVER

Poorboyz Productions just dropped the trailer for their new movie REVOLVER. Along with the trailer they also released the DVD box art and I’m happy to say that the main image on the front of the box is one of my shots from my trip to Alaska this past spring time. The skier is Tim Durtchi and the photo was taken near Haines while we were up there with the awesome crew from Alaska Heliskiing. Tim skied a few turns down the face in the background and then launched a huge rodeo 720 off the wind-lip deep down into that …

Ski photo slideshow for 2010 Olympics in Whistler

Before the 2010 Olympics kicked off in my home town of Whistler, BC, I was commissioned by the local arts council to produce a slideshow of some of my skiing images. The slideshow was played on TVs and giant screens around the Olympics during the breaks between events. Check it out below and click through to Vimeo if you want to watch it in HD.

So you want to go and shoot skiing in Alaska?

I’m becoming very very familiar with the interior of the hotel room in which I’m currently sitting. The front door is a portal to the 1970s, wood paneled walls that creak in the night, vinyl flooring and a selection of electrical appliances that would make an interesting museum exhibit. They call it the “slow roast” here in Haines, Alaska, and nobody knows how long it will last. When I first arrived in town 2 weeks ago the skies were blue for a couple of days and we got right into it. But since then our fortune has changed. We have …
