Packing for a skiing photo trip to Japan

A few months ago I got a call from Salomon asking if I would like to be part of a trip to Japan in February. The crew would be Sammy Carlson, Dane Tudor and Mike Henitiuk along with filmers from Salomon and also Poorboyz Productions. I was stoked! Japan was right up there on the list of places I wanted to go and I knew the proposed crew for the trip would be a good one…. We left Vancouver airport heading for Tokyo and then a flight from there to Sapporo on Hokaido, Japan’s North Island. Trying to pack gear …

Canon 5d MKII + 17-40 f4L, 1/1000 ISO 800 f8.0 This is an unused shot from a commercial shoot for Whistler Blackcomb last spring. You can view the final ads here in an old blog post.

Whats been happening?!?

The blog went quiet for a couple of weeks there as I have been away in Alberta shooting alongside the Poorboyz Productions crew as they work on their new Ski film called……ohhh I can’t tell you that just yet 😉 But I can tell you I just got a sneak peek at the trailer and it WILL blow your mind. We headed to the city of Edmonton on new years eve to shoot urban skiing for 10 days with Matt Walker, Leigh Powis, Mike Henitiuk and LJ Strenio. Poorboyz filmers Pete Alport and Cody Carter met us up there and …

Image Displays in Whistler During the Winter Olympics

I’m pleased to announce that my photography will be displayed around Whistler throughout the Winter Olympics. The Arts Council of Whistler has secured several screen locations to feature local artist’s work on a rotation.

What’s been happening…. in BC

It’s been a bit quiet on the blog in the last week as I have been hard at work. Winter is in full force here in British Columbia and that means i’m busy every day with one thing or another. Last weekend I headed north to the remote township of Bralorne. Bralorne is an old gold mining town high up in the mountains north of Whistler. At this time of year the best way to get there is with a snowmobile and a 2 hour sled up the Hurley pass from Pemberton meadows. In the middle of the winter the …

Record breaking start to the winter

Since the beginning of November Whistler has received 493cm of snow, and it’s still falling. This has smashed the previous record for November with 10 days still to go. Originally the mountains were due to open next weekend on the 27th but with the heavy snowfall early in the month, Whistler Blackcomb pulled out all the stops to get some lifts turning for everyone a few weeks early. Thanks for all the hard work guys! A couple of days ago I headed up the mountain with Jeff Thomas from Poorboyz, Mike Henitiuk, TJ Schiller and Riley Leboe as they begun …

Max Hill – SBC Skier Cover

A nice surprise in my mail box this morning. I knew about this for a couple of weeks but today was the first time I have seen the finished product. This is my 8th cover but my first one in N.America so i’m really pleased with this one. Max Hill is the man on the cover and the shot was taken last April in Whistler, BC. I had the idea for this shot about 3 years ago but that year at the time we didn’t have the snow for it. Last year there was plenty in the spring time so …

Whistler Blackcomb Peak to Peak campaign

Back in the spring time I was asked to shoot a campaign for Whistler Blackcomb. The ads were to center around the new Peak to Peak gondola that spans the gap between Whistler and Blackcomb and the first versions have now hit the news stands in Freeskier magazine and Transworld Snowboarding. We had some difficulties with the weather for these shoots and they were postponed multiple times but in the end it turned out really well. On the left is Max Hill, on the right Mikey Pederson.

NZ Trip – What worked and what didn’t

I’ve seen similar post on a couple of other photographers blogs before and always found them to be interesting and useful. When heading off on a long trip it can be tough to figure out how much gear to take and in what combination. On my recent trip I had to do just about every type of ski photography you can imagine. Backcountry skiing, heli skiing, daytime and night time park shooting, product shooting and portraiture. I was trying to accomplish this with only 2 pieces of checked in baggage (32KG each) and one piece of hand baggage and that …

South of the Equator – Chapter 1

Eventually winter comes to an end in Whistler. Last day of summer camps on Blackcomb glacier were mid way through July and with temperatures in the mid 30s every day I needed to get back to a cooler climate. I flew direct from Vancouver to Auckland on a new service from Air New Zealand and I have to say that they are just about the best airline I have ever flown with. Though it does help the that booking agent was an action sports photo fan and kindly hooked me up with a bulkhead seat so I could stretch out. …

Summer happenings

Bit of an odds and ends posting this one. I’ve been shooting a few things up on Blackcomb glacier in the last week or so. The progression of skiing over the last year is pretty impressive. It seems everyone has a new variation on a double cork or double flip these days. Paul Bergeron (photo on the left) is looking particularly impressive. I also shot a quick video of Peter Olenicks new double which seems to be a kind of misty 5 to switch backflip. Crazy stuff. Pete Olenicks new dub from Dan Carr on Vimeo. A few nights ago …

All quiet on the western coast…for now

The blog has been pretty quiet lately. Having finished my final shoot of the winter for Whistler Blackcomb in May I took a bit of time off after a long winter. I went back to England to visit my family and also took some time to head to France to watch the Le Mans 24 hour motor race. After skiing, motor racing is my second passion. One day I would love to spend a bit more time shooting it. The trip to France was a holiday for me so i didn’t spend a lot of time shooting but I did …
