Canon 600mm f/4 DO on the Way

Image: pophoto I don’t often post about rumours on my blog, but I’m too excited about this to let it pass, and it’s also not that much of a rumour since since Canon have already shown a working prototype of this lens… the EF 600mm f/4 DO IS. Canon have been working on diffractive optic technology for about 20 years, and it initially received a lukewarm reception when the first lenses were launched. The technology allows a lens to be physically much smaller and lighter than a regular lens, but it used to come at the slight cost of some …

Canon Canada Prices Increase On April 1st – Buy Now!

This news has been floating around for some time now, but in case you haven’t seen it, prices for Canon lenses will be increasing on April 1st due to the weakness of the Canadian Dollar.  It’s likely that cameras will also increase in price as well, although the quoted price of the recently announced 1-DX Mark II will remain as announced, and explains why the price seemed quite high when it was first revealed. Canon have not said exactly how much prices will be increasing, but it appears to be between 10-20%. If you’ve been thinking of picking up a lens …

Adobe Lightroom 6.3 Now Available

Adobe made Lightroom 6.3 available today and there’s several important things to note about it.  Whilst it adds the usual array of new RAW support for newer cameras, it also adds a ton of new lens profiles for lenses like the new Zeiss Milvus range, as well as the Canon 400mm f/4 DO II. As well as performance improvements, Adobe have also reverted to the original import dialog after making sweeping changes in version 6.2.  Most people seem to prefer the original import dialog and they have listened to feedback and acted quickly to bring it back.  Creative Cloud members …

Zeiss launches new Milvus line of lenses

Every now and again a nice new lens comes along, but it’s rare for an entire range of lenses to be launched simultaneously unless it’s for a new mount.  Zeiss surprised a lot of people this week with the launch of the new Milvus lens lineup which included 6 new lenses as follows: Zeiss Milvus 21mm f/2.8 ZE Zeiss Milvus 35mm f/2 ZE Zeiss Milvus 50mm f/1.4 ZE Zeiss Milvus 50mm f/2 ZE Zeiss Milvus 85mm f/1.4 ZE Zeiss Milvus 100mm f/2 ZE They certainly look the part, and Zeiss’ recent offerings have been very well received.  It’ll also be interesting …

Canon’s New 35mm f/1.4 II

Canon has just launched an MK II version of their 35mm f/1.4 L lens, and it should be a beauty. Here are the details.

Lightroom 5.7 Includes 7D Mark II Raw Support

Adobe has finally released an update for Lightroom that contains support for the Canon 7D Mark II‘s Raw files, as well a number of other new cameras like the Nikon D750 and Canon G7X.  Head to Adobe’s blog post for a full list of new additions. The good news for me is that I can now begin to evaluate the 7D Mark II’s image quality in more detail, particularly when it comes to high iso performance.  As a taster, here is a shot from a couple of nights ago that captures a sizeable meteor streaking across the night sky in …

Think Tank Production Manager

This new roller bag from Think Tank Photo popped a few weeks ago but I was busy at the time and forgot to mention it.  I’m a big fan of Think Tank’s gear and I’ve used their tough-as-nails roller bags to travel with for many years.  The Production Manager is the largest one yet!  Really the photos do all the talking, so just let your imagination run wild with what you might be able to fit in this thing!  Designed primarily for lighting equipment, but equally at home storing your long lens collection on the road or at the office. …

Canon’s White Unicorn – 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS II Finally Unveiled

After 16 years, Canon has finally launched a replacement for the original 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 L IS and on the face of it, it looks to have been worth the wait.  Gone is the “dust pump” push-pull zoom design that so many people despised from the original.  The Mark II lens features a typical zoom ring, but add a new variable friction control that we’ve not seen before on Canon lenses.  As you can see in the images, a central ring labelled Smooth<<—–>> Tight, now controls the amount of friction on the extension of the zoom.  The overall design is reminiscent …
