With the quality of Micro Four Thirds cameras improving it was only a matter of time before Panasonic and Olympus began to target professional photographers with higher quality lenses.  A short while ago Panasonic launched a Leica branded 25mm f1.4 , Olympus released the M. Red announced today that the long awaited Canon mount for their EPIC cameras will begin shipping on September 9th to the first people who pre-ordered them.  Further orders are being taken now for a price of $2000.  The mount itself is machined out of solid titanium and features a safe locking ring to further solidify the connection between camera and lens.  Right out of the gate it looks as though they have firmware programmed to work with a majority of Canon lenses, with more to be added very shortly (and some third party ones like Sigma). When a supported lens …

New Elinchrom Zoom Heads , More To Come ?

A few new products have appeared on the Elinchrom website today.  As a bit of an Elinchrom fan myself I like to see what they are up to.  I use a Ranger system at the moment and I have rented their mains powered pack systems in the past for a few shoots.  I find their stuff to be very well built and reliable.  It often gets compared to Pro Photo equipment but Pro Photo is more expensive and I’m constantly hearing my fellow photogs sending their Pro Photo stuff in for servicing. When I first saw this pop up in …

Canon have announced today that the brand new Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II  and Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II are now shipping to dealers !  I expect these to be very popular, the 400mm in particular so if you’ve been waiting for one I’d urge yo to place an order pretty quickly!  Initial reports of the 400mm performance have been glowing, particularly with regards to the performance with the new MKIII extenders (incidentally I will be posting my review of these this coming Monday).  As I noted a few weeks back, the new cases for the 400mm lens …

The mirror less camera market is a fierce battlefield this year with a seemingly endless stream of new products from Panasonic, Sony and Olympus.  This kind of rivalry is only a good thing for consumers though as the top players fight for the spotlight with new features and impressive price points.  Today Sony unveiled a new top of the line NEX-7 camera ( as well as an NEX-5N) that packs a staggering 24 MP APS-C sensor in an incredibly small package.  Not only does this make it the largest sensor in the mirror less field, but also the largest APS-C …

Sony Launches New A77 Camera

As I mentioned in a previous posts this has been Sony’s worst kept secret.  In fact there have been so many leaks about it that I have a hard time believing it to be anything other than intentional on Sony’s part. Regardless it’s a very interesting camera and Sony have every right to create some buzz and fanfare! Lets take a look at the major specs: Video function and OLED Viewfinder The A77 will be the first DSLR to feature 1080p video at a full 60p for beautiful slow motion footage.  Current cameras like the Canon 7d or Nikon D3100 …

Sony’s Worst Kept Secret – The A77

Sony revealed the shell of a prototype camera at CES 2011 back in January so it’s never been a secret that something interesting is on its way.  In recent weeks though we’ve seen a steady leak of information and even pictures of Sony’s next flagship camera and it appears to boast a very interesting selection of features.  The A77 will be announced on August 24th (alongside an A65) and continue to use the pellicle mirror technology that we saw in the A55 and it has a few more tricks up its sleeve. Lets take a look at the major specs: …

Canon 5dMKII used for action sequences in Captain America movie.

I just received this press release from Canon and I thought it was pretty interesting.  It seems that we can now add Captain America : The First Avenger, to the list of Hollywood feature films to use the Canon 5dMKII in their production.  The small size of the camera makes it ideal for POV shots and sequences like car chases.  The 5dMKII is a few years old now but it seems that nobody has eclipsed it’s video performance yet.  Full info after the break. Full release: LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., August 1, 2011 – Canon U.S.A., a leader in digital imaging, …

Getty images sport’s photographers are amongst the best in the world and it’s a known fact that Canon and Nikon seek their opinions on various aspects of new products and often lend them new equipment for testing prior to the official launch.  I follow a number of Getty’s top shooters on Twitter and an interesting conversation popped up today between a few of them.  Richard Heathcote has been lent one of Canon’s new 400mm f2.8 MKII lenses to try out.  Check out his photo of it below which reveals a new style hard case and new style of lens cap …

Photographers Guide to Google +

Google + is the new hot ticket in town for fans and user of social media.  I was hesitant about it to begin with and wasn’t sure I really wanted anything more the Twitter and Facebook but the reponse to G+ has been overwhelmingly positive during the initial roll out.  In fact it took me many months to gather as many followers on Twitter and Facebook as I have on G+ in just a week.  What’s interesting to me is that it isn’t all the same followers.  I never publicized my G+ account on twitter at all so people are …
