Be Prepared to Focus Manually!

For this Behind the Shot post I wanted to discuss a recent situation that I think everyone needs to be prepared for. Autofocus performance varies from brand to brand, but even the best – at this time that is certainly any Sony camera with their Real Time Eye AF system – can get caught out by complex situations with a lot of foreground clutter. Equipment Used For This Shot It’s therefore important to understand your camera system and lenses well enough to be able to switch to manual focusing at the drop of a hat. For some lenses and cameras

Gear Check: Canon EF 400mm f/2.8 L IS III

In 2018 Canon launched an updated EF 400mm f/2.8 that shaved 26% off the weight of the previous version, bringing it down to a relatively svelte 2840g. Ok, that’s still quite heavy, but it’s 1KG lighter than the 400mm f/2.8 L IS II, and 2.5KG lighter than the original 400mm f/2.8 L IS. Having spent some time with this lens now, I thought I’d offer up some initial thoughts on what can certainly be thought of as the flagship lens in the Canon EF L-Series lineup. The Good This lens is not a whole lot heavier than the lightweight EF

Think Tank Launches Digital Holster 150 for Telephoto Zooms

The Digital Holster range from Think Tank Photo has been around for some time, but now they have expanded it with the addition of the Digital Holster 150. This new larger size comes in response to customer demand for a holster that can fit the growing number of 150-600mm sized lenses on the market. I would also include the Nikon 200-500 in this list, as well as 100-400mm lenses from Canon and Sony, and the Sony 200-600mm. In addition to these zoom lenses, it’ll also fit a 300mm f/2.8, the Canon 400mm f/4 DO IS II and the Nikon 500mm

Gear List Updated

Hey folks! I have always maintained a gear list of my own personal gear so that I can quickly point people to it when they ask what camera/lens/bag/tripod etc. I’m currently using. This week I gave the page a pretty big spring clean and made it far easy to digest, as well as making sure it was up to date with the latest info. >>> Check it out here.

Peak Design Launches Innovative New Travel Tripod

Peak Design have launched a new travel tripod on Kickstarter and based on their past successes with the crowd funding platform, it should come as no surprise that they blew past the $2million funding mark in a single day. Smashing their $500,000 goal with 57 days still to go. “During my travels in 2008 I began wondering why on Earth my tripod was so big. The thing was full of negative space and knobs, and I felt like something designed for portability could do much better,” Peak Design CEO, Peter Dering. During the campaign the new Peak Design Travel Tripod
