Behind the Shot: Night Racing at Le Mans

The Le Mans 24 Hours is without a doubt, one of the most incredible sporting events in the world. Every summer over a quarter of a million people descend on Circuit De La Sarthe in Le Mans, France, for the greatest motor race on the planet. National Geographic even called it the #1 event on the planet! The cars and drivers battle for a continuous 24 hour period around a race track that is partly made up of local roads, and partly a modernized F1-style facility. From a photographic standpoint the race delivers many challenges because of its length, and …

Lowepro Flipside Sport AW Review

I’ve previously reviewed the Lowepro Photo Sport 200 which I found to make a good lightweight adventure photography bag for one camera, one lens missions. This year Lowepro added to their lightweight lineup with the Flipside Sport 10L and 15L and they were kind enough to provide one for long term testing. After a few months of usage I’ve drawn my conclusions so read on to find out more! Overall Design I’ve never really understood the name designation of these packs as side does not flip at all, the aforementioned Photo Sport 200 had a side opening and would have …

Behind the Shot: Backcountry Big Air

This image was taken on the Pemberton Ice Cap near Whistler in British Columbia, Canada. We accessed the location by snowmobiling out there and it took about an hour to get up here from the car park on the side of the highway. Every year the snowpack forms a slightly different shape and this was the first time we had seen it for a perfect spot to build a jump in this area. Dane Tudor is the skier and we were filming for a skiing movie produced by Poorboyz productions. Dane’s trajectory will actually take him to landing down beneath …

Canon Expands Cinema EOS Lineup With The New C100

Back in November last year I interviewed one of Canon’s product developers Eric Allen who worked on the C300 Cinema camera. At the time I asked him if this was the bridge camera between the DSLR world and a professional camera system or whether that mantle was being assumed by the 4k DSLR that is also being released shortly. Eric replied definitively that the 4K DSLR was a different thing entirely, leading us to assume that there would soon be a camera that more closely bridged that gap that now exists between the DSLRs and the C300. That time is …

Profoto Announces New B4 Air

Profoto updates their Air lineup again, introducing the new B4 Air which will take flash durations down to 25,000 of second. This could well be the new king of portable strobes for action sports photogs. My question is what is Elinchrom playing at ? They have a loyal following in the portable strobe world with the Ranger RX but it has been years since any updates. They need to come out with something new soon or I will be switching to this new B4 system! Profoto Introduces New Pro-B4 1000 Air Durable new battery generator sets a new standard for …

Manfrotto Pro Photo Lino Vest Review

The folks at Manfrotto Canada recently provided me with one of their Lino Photo Vests for evaluation and I’ve been using it for a couple of months now. Being an item of clothing I felt I should wear it in my introduction video so take a look below as I run through the main features of the vest. Key Features The Manfrotto vest doesn’t have as many pockets as some of its competitors out there like the Domke vest but the most important pockets are well thought out. Frankly it would be unhealthy to ever fill all of the pockets …

Fuji’s Upcoming New Products For Photokina

Leaked images of Fuji’s new cameras have appeared online today and boy do Fuji know how to design a camera. The first is the cheaper alternative to the X-Pro 1 , the X-E1 which is available in black or silver. The second appears to be a regular point and shoot camera but given Fuji’s now standard retro makeover and it looks gorgeous. No real word on specs yet but it is clear that the X-E1 doesn’t include an optical viewfinder. This is actually a good thing in my opinion as my experience withe Fuji X100 left me dissatisfied with focus …

Award Winner – Best Action Image I was invited to Austria to take part in a freeskiing photo competition at the Nine Queens event. At the end of our time there, we submitted our photos and various prizes were handed out. This image won the main award for Best Action Image. The skier in the shot is American Olympian, Keri Herman. There’s quite a lot going on here so let’s break it down into different sections: Shot Design and …

Canon 40mm f2.8 STM Firmware Update

Firmware Version 1.2.0 addresses the following phenomenon 1. If pressure is applied to the lens barrel while the lens is mounted to the camera (pressure can be applied even while attaching the lens cap or while carrying the camera with the lens attached in a bag), the autofocusing function of the lens may stop working. A Canon EOS 1D X, 5D III (at v1.1.3 or later) or a Rebel T4i/650D is needed to install the upgrade. Alternatively, the lens can be sent to Canon Service to have the firmware upgrade installed.Download Firmware 1.2.0
