Gear Check: Nitecore D4 Battery Charger

Recently I was looking for a new battery charger that would handle all of the different types of rechargeable batteries I have, not including camera ones. I needed something that would handle my Ni-MH AA and AAA Eneloop batteries that I use in things like flashes and remote triggers, and also my Li-ion 18650 batteries that power my flashlights for light painting. As well as this versatility, I also wanted to be able to easily power the charger from a 12v outlet in my car or when plugged into the Goal Zero Yeti 1400 Lithium power station in my photography …

Installing a Goal Zero Boulder Solar Panel on My Trailer Roof

This post was made possible by my friends at B&H Photo, where you can buy the Boulder 100 solar panel that I installed on my Taxa TigerMoth photography adventure trailer. Of course this content is also relevant to any other van or trailer you might be considering for your own adventure vehicle! If you’ve been following the posts in the Overland section of my blog in recent months, you’ll have first seen me writing about how to connect a Goal Zero solar panel to a Zamp solar connection. This was my initial setup when I got this trailer, and it …

How to Remove Stuck Time Machine Backups from Mac Trash

This is a little off topic from my usual posts, but I want to make sure the information is out there because this problem was a MAJOR pain in the ass to solve. In fact, even an senior Apple tech support engineer couldn’t wrap his head around it after an hour of trying things. In the end, the solution turned out to be pretty simple. THIS WORKS! Just read the stacks of comments below the post! The Cause Whilst Time Machine will automatically prune old backups to keep the total backup size within the limit of the drive you’re using, …

Let’s Talk About Luminar 2018… Because Its AWESOME!

Regular blog readers might remember me talking about Macphun’s excellent Aurora HDR and Luminar software over the past year or so, and I’ll tell you right now that you’re going to be hearing a lot more about Luminar from this point onwards. Luminar 2018 will be launched on November 16th (pre-order), but I’ve had a copy for a few weeks now and it has me very excited. To start with, PC users can rejoice because Luminar 2018 will be available on both the Mac and the PC, and with it Macphun will be changing their name to Skylum Software – …

New Recommended Gear Page at B&H

By now you guys know that I often work closely with B&H Photo to borrow gear for testing purposes, and sometimes to bring you great deals on all kinds of camera equipment. I have a pretty international audience on this site and what I like about B&H is how easy they make international ordering. Here in Canada, shipping is free for orders over $100, and they let me pay the tax and duties during the ordering process so I know what my final total is going to be. I can’t speak for the process in all other countries, but I …

Drobo Explore Adventure Photography Contest Winner

I’m a little bit late posting this piece of news, but I’m very pleased to tell you guys about it none the less. I’m a long time user of Drobos for storing my photo archives, and this summer they ran an adventure photography contest which seemed right up my alley! I’m happy to say that the image I entered took home the top prize. I can’t quite remember the submission criteria off the top of my head, but roughly speaking it said something along the lines of “show us a photo that embodies your enjoyment of adventure”. A self portrait …

New Photos from Floe Lake in Kootenay National Park

I recently took a quick trip over to Kootenay Naitonal Park on the Alberta/BC border to photograph the golden larch trees beneath the famous Grand Wall on the edge of Floe Lake. I’ve wanted to check this place out for some time, and luckily I had a small opening in my schedule at just the right time. GALLERY –>> You can check out my photos from Floe Lake here.

Nice Lighting! So Simple…

I took this photo for a review of the MindShift BackLight 36L backpack that I posted over on ShutterMuse.com recently. Someone commented that the photo had “nice lighting!”, so I thought I would take a second to explain how I did it. Drumroll… A single Canon 600EX Rt speedlight bounced off the ceiling of my living room. That’s it. No fancy light modifiers, no expensive studio setups and only that one single light source. It just goes to show you how things don’t always need to be made too complicated. I always use the Canon ST-E3 radio transmitter with my 600EX …

Building a Solar Junction Box from a Pelican Case for Goal Zero Solar Panels

Those of you following my Instagram stories recently will have seen my portable base camp, a Taxa TigerMoth adventure trailer. I’ve been documenting some of the modifications I’ve made to it on this blog, and today we’re going to solve a solar power problem. I have a lot of Goal Zero gear because I think their products represent good value for money, and their customer service has proven to be exceptional. They make a variety of great products, such as battery packs and solar panels, but they have a tendency to go their own route, instead of using industry standards when it comes …
