Canon 40mm f2.8 STM Firmware Update

Firmware Version 1.2.0 addresses the following phenomenon 1. If pressure is applied to the lens barrel while the lens is mounted to the camera (pressure can be applied even while attaching the lens cap or while carrying the camera with the lens attached in a bag), the autofocusing function of the lens may stop working. A Canon EOS 1D X, 5D III (at v1.1.3 or later) or a Rebel T4i/650D is needed to install the upgrade. Alternatively, the lens can be sent to Canon Service to have the firmware upgrade installed. Hitech Pro Stop 10 ND Filter Review

The kind folks at B&H recently provided me with several products from the filter company Hitech for testing and review. I’ve already reviewed their 100mm modular filter holder and now it is time to take a look at one of the most talked about filters, the 10-Stop ND. Let’s start with the basics, why would you need a 10-stop ND filter ?  In the vast majority of cases the reason to use one is going to be to create long exposure photographs of flowing water and skies.  A 10-stop filters will allow you to take some truly LONG exposures even

In Print – Le Mans Images In Digital Photo

Expanding on the new One Click series post category which has been quite popular recently I thought I should also start posting some samples of my work in print. With both of these categories you can see what I actually get up to with all this gear that I’m always writing about, or at least that which I’m allowed to show you. So kicking things off today is a magazine which British readers will be familiar with, Digital Photo, the UKs largest photography magazine. They are running some of my recent motorsport images in their Big Shots gallery section at

Hitech 100mm Modular Filter Holder Review

Physical construction and design The unit that I was provided with is Hitech’s newer modular system, not to be confused with their previous offerings which featured a set number of filter stages in 2-stage and 3-stage offerings, and not to be confused with previous plastic holders.  The main plate of this holder is very nicely machined aluminum with thoughtfully recessed holes for the mounting screws.  The kit that I’m reviewing came with options for up to three drop in filters and a separate 105mm adapter.  It also came with some spare crews of varying size and nuts to put it

Behind the Shot: Milky Way and Meteors

Some of you might know that every August the earth passes through the trail of a comet and we experience a meteor shower know as Perseids. This image of a meteor streaking through the sky was shot during an August Perseid storm and with the help of a little luck, I really like how it turned out. Whenever you’re shooting the night sky, you need to find something else to include in the shot to help ground the whole scene and give things some scale. This can be something in the near foreground like the trees in this shot, or

Are Sony About To Change The Camera Industry ?

It’s not all that often that I feel compelled to write about something based on a rumor but this warrants further discussion for two reasons.  Firstly the source has been remarkably reliable in the past and secondly, what they are rumoring is a real game changer.  Sony Alpha Rumors is reporting that Sony’s next NEX cameras will feature support for apps, and an internet connection.  In my opinion this has been a long time coming.  Think of how successful photography apps have been on the iPhone.  Now imagine if that was coupled to a camera that actually had some power

Canon 40mm f2.8 STM Product Advisory

Canon have posted a product advisory relating to the excellent little 40mm f2.8 STM.  It doesn’t seem to affect all the 40mm STM lenses though as I was anable to get my copy to produce the documented issue. To Users of the EF40mm f/2.8 STM Interchangeable Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras Thank you for using Canon products. It has been confirmed that the autofocusing function of the EF40mm f/2.8 STM lens, which was released in June 2012, may not operate correctly. The details of this phenomenon are described below. Canon 7D Firmware Version 2 Is Here – BIG Updates

You can finally download the previously announced V2 firmware for the Canon 7D HERE from Canon. The press release below walks you through all the changes and if you are a 7D shooter then you are going to be feeling pretty good about now.  There are a lot of improvements and to me it doesn’t seem like this would be something that Canon would be doing if there was a 7D MKIII just around the corner. Canon EOS 7D firmware v2 – new features: Improved maximum burst for RAW images (up to 25) In-camera RAW image editing In-camera Image Rating
