So Fuji went and announced a new camera in the X-Series today called the X-E1. It’s pegged as the more affordable version of the X-Pro 1 but in my mind it makes the X-Pro 1 a now pointless purchase. You see the X-E1 features the exact same 16MP sensor as its bigger brother, it adds a built in pop-up flash and it is physically quite a bit smaller. What’s the catch then ? Well you loose the hybrid optical viewfinder that Fuji touted as the major feature of the Fuji X100 and the X-Pro 1. But here’s then thing, that viewfinder was never very good anyway. It made accurate focusing almost impossible and when I owned the X100 I always switched it to electronic VF mode so that I could actually get some photos that were in focus. Not only that but Fuji is using SONY’s EVF technology, tech that has advanced since the introduction of the frankly incredible NEX-7 EVF from last year. This new one has a 5000:1 contrast ratio! So all in all, there’s no way I would recommend that anyone buys an X-Pro 1 anymore ! Save some money and get the X-E1 which looks great.

Exceptional color rendition and image resolution
Fujifilm’s advanced X-Trans CMOS sensor is capable of delivering resolution that is superior to other APS-C sensors, and equal to even some full frame sensors found in popular DSLR cameras.
The FUJIFILM X-E1’s unique color filter array can effectively minimize moiré and false color without the need for an optical low pass filter. Please update the firmware of your camera body when using the XF18-55mm and XF14mm lenses for the first time.
The firmware will be supplied by SD card (bundled in 18-55mm and 14mm Lens Boxes) or can be downloaded from “Support” on the Fujifilm Global website.
I think you need to use an NEX-7 before you title your articles. First, there’s an initial lag when the evf turns on that’s a real turn-off to many of us. The X100’s lag I can live with, plus I have an ovf. With the NEX-7, the lag feels like an eternity and no ovf for most shooting conditions. Thats’s not introducing any discussion about the 7’s very narrow viewing angle, issues for eyeglass wearers and tracking lag. The xp1 will benefit from the new af algorithim and the new lenses. With an ovf, it still has its attractions.
I don’t see what the NEX has to do with the title of my article ?
Having owned the X100 , which I sold, I think I’m qualified to pass my comments on that. I have also used an NEX-7 on many occasions as well. But this post has nothing to do with the NEX-7 so I’m not sure why you talking about it ?
The X-E1 uses a Sony EVF but the optics in front of it are designed by fuji and so is the sensor that turns the EVF on and off. The issues you refer to are a problem with Sony’s design of things around the EVF. Fuji have even stated that their optics do not have such large magnification , ie their viewing angle is much wider.
Nothing to do with the quality of the EVF at all and I can say that the functionality of the X100 EVF was good , so as long as Fuji kept that and simply added Sony’s EVF then this should be great. The NEX-7 is now an old camera and has nothing to do with this Fuji camera. This EVF isn’t even the one from the NEX-7 it’s from the as yet unannounced NEX-6.
You’re lamentably negative comments speak more to the way you used or didn’t use the X-Pro1 than to the camera itself. With the corrected AF frame setting set to ON and the most recent firmware installed (4 July), I’ve experienced fewer out of focus shots than I did with my Canon 5DII – especially in low light situations. Moreover, the hybrid optical viewfinder with the rangefinder-like overlay is one of the best things about this camera. It does, however, require a fair amount of diligent practice, but that practice rewards the photographer with greatly improved compositional capabilities.
The simple fact that you need to practice with it means that it could have been designed far better. It was the same with the X100, a bit of practice would help, learning where to place the AF points (ie not always exactly on the subject you want in focus). But that is not what most people expect from a $1000+ product.
To suggest there is a some inverse relationship between the money spent and the time necessary to travel from novice to expert with any photographic tool, is, frankly, laughable. That journey requires you to put in your time. Furthermore, the gratuitous, self-serving comments you made in the original posting are unfair not only to Fuji but also to your readers who weren’t aware that you believe expensive cameras should arrive with mindmeld connectivity.
There is a HUGE difference between putting time in to become a better photographer and putting time in to overcome the design floors of a camera. There is also a difference between having to practice with equipment in order to overcome poorly designed features, or Having to practice to become familiar with its operation in general. Of course any camera requires some learning as controls are different and the way it operates in different conditions is different but you should not have to figure out ‘workarounds’ which was my Fuji experience.
Clearly as an x-pro1 owner you are happy and thats fine and I’m not going to waste any more of my time on this. Note that I’m not trying to get people not to buy a Fuji camera… I’m merely suggesting they buy a different one to the one you own….
Why you need an X-Pro1? (still a great camera for landscapes) Because the X-E1 has no OVF of course. Who wants to look at a TV screen when you can see the real world?
