The worlds best ballhead just got better!

The Acratech GP Ball-Head has long been recognized as a leader in its class. The GP even won DP Reviews coveted “Top Pick”. Now Acratech is moving competitively forward with their new GXP Ball-Head. The GXP has a wide range of significant new features and it continues the tradition of Acratech's world-class quality.

Our Acratech GXP Ball-Head is uniquely designed to function as a Ball Head, a gimbal head, and a leveling panoramic head.   It’s like getting 3 pieces of equipment all wrapped up in one beautiful and lightweight unit!

The Gimbal action will have you shooting action like a pro. The Gimbal feature works with any lens (up to 400mm F4.0) that has a tripod collar. The pin in the bottom of the ball and the sleeve on the stem of the ball is what creates a smooth pivot for the Gimbal.

Unscrew the quick release clamp and put it onto the bottom of the head and you are now ready to use the the GXP Ball-Head to create level, single row panoramas. This eliminates the need to carry a separate leveling base in order to create accurate stitched panoramas, as you'll be able to pan parallel to the horizon even when using your tripod on rocky or uneven terrain.

All Acratech Ball-Heads are designed and built  to be lightweight for travel photography and rugged for the active outdoor photographer. The open structure lets moisture, dirt and debris fall through instead of being trapped inside a socket.

Available with our Arca Swiss style, knob or locking lever quick release clamp.

New Features of the GXP

  • Solidly supports an impressive 50lbs. (double the capacity of the GP)
  • The GXP only weighs 1lb bearing a 50:1 load ratio.
  • Large, easy to tighten, high torque lock knob is easy to tighten even with heavy winter gloves on.
  • New extra fine tension adjustment.
  • Our unique, panoramic adjustable zero pointer makes it easy to return to your starting point when you are shooting a sequence of images.
  • The quick release clamp has deep side notches for more clearance with other manufacturers stop screws.
  • The level on the quick release clamp is clearly visible even with your camera attached to the clamp.
  • Our quick release clamp jaws are more pointed to be more compatible with some manufactures quick release plates with less pointed dovetails.
  • The locking lever clamp has a safety zone so the first 25% of the levers motion will not allow your camera to release.

One and done, buy it for life

Posted by Matt S. on 18th Apr 2024

There are a lot of choices out there for this type of product; in all my research, Acratech kept being mentioned as among the best for feature-set, design, and manufacturing. I'm the type of person who would rather pay up once for a product that will meet all of my uses, and, with regular maintenance, outlive me. The GXP (with lever-clamp) ticks all of those boxes; the quality workmanship is immediately apparent upon removing it from its carton. Mounting it up and learning my way around it was a breeze and it only gets more enjoyable with regular use. It's an investment that I'm glad I made, and will likely be the last of its type that I buy.

    Outstanding

I was unsure about spending this amount of money on a ball head but once I received it was blown away by the difference in build quality and features from the Manfrotto I’ve been using for years.

    GXP Ball head

Great piece of equipment! Very thoughtfully designed. I have had and loved my RRS BH-55 for years, but this will now be my go-to ball head.

    Perfect fit.

Posted by Peter Brimhall on 22nd Feb 2021

I’ve been having problems with my ball head for a while. It’s literally caused me to miss shots and almost let my camera fall. Ive became use to making sure the screws hadn’t backed out before every use. A real hassle. After a lot of research and YouTube videos I purchased this GPX head. Right away I could tell it was a perfect fit with the rest of my kit. After several weeks of use I’m completely happy with its ease of use and firm security. No fear of my camera toppling off. And my tripod set-up is lighter. If you use your tripod a lot you owe it to yourself to have gear that works the way you do. I

    Nice!

Posted by Greg on 15th Feb 2021

I owned a RRS BH-40 but sold it to buy this product. I already owned the Acratech leveling base and loved it. I love everything about the GXP ball head but it is not as smooth as the RRS BH-40 which is why I rated only 4 stars. However, the Acratech will, I am sure, turn out to be my last ball head!

The most amazing minimalistic ballhead I have ever seen

Extremely versatile, super light, 360 degrees easy positioning, sturdy, and post-apocalyptic looking. I absolutely love it.

The GXP ball head with lever release...

Posted by Gary on 2nd Jul 2020

Well done in the design and execution. The ball head is solid and designed for use in varied conditions. The knobs are easy to grasp/use; the head positioning was easy and smooth to position where needed. The position of the level was designed so it is not obstructed by the camera body. The lever release - how could I have not got one of these sooner. Overall well done!!

A work or art....with just one minor issue.

Posted by Christopher Aquila on 25th May 2020

I absolutely love this ball head. The ball is smoother than any ball head I've ever used or tested. The tension knob actually works fantastic. I love the weight. I normally carry my tripod over my shoulder while looking for compositions hiking through the desert or in the mountains and any extra weight is definitely noticeable. I noticed the difference immediately. My shoulder no longer feels like I've been carrying a sack of potatoes for miles. That was a MAJOR plus. There's absolutely no sagging once you tighten the ball. BIG MAJOR PLUS. But..... there is one thing that they really have to address. The panning motion / plate is sticky and not as smooth as I would have expected from a top of the line setup. The ball head is soooooo smoooooth and then you try panning and it's just not the same experience. It's not a deal breaker because I don't do much video but if I did this world definitely be an issue. Now, this could just be a defect and I was just the unlucky one to receive this particular one and I may send it in to have them look at it. I say this because I have the Panoramic Head from Acratech as well and it does not have this problem and when I do video it's from the Panoramic head anyway. Right now I can't send it in because I have too many trips coming up but I have all the confidence in the world it there's a problem they will fix it or replace it, no problem. The bottom line is this ball head far out performs all of the ball heads I've ever used and I am very happy and impressed with it. I would have given it 5 stars had it not been for the panning plate issue, but like I said it's not really an issue for photography. I'll update this review after I send it in and get it back.
