The 10 Million Dollar Tripod – Ends Tomorrow

The Kickstarter campaign for the Peak Design Travel Tripod has just two days left. If you want to secure this record-breaking tripod at a large discount over the eventual retail price, you must act now! Incredibly, at the time of writing this post the campaign has raised just shy of 10 million dollars, and it will easily surpass that mark by the end of the campaign. 10 million dollars! People are REALLY excited about the design of this new tripod!!

Peak Design Launches Innovative New Travel Tripod

Peak Design have launched a new travel tripod on Kickstarter and based on their past successes with the crowd funding platform, it should come as no surprise that they blew past the $2million funding mark in a single day. Smashing their $500,000 goal with 57 days still to go. “During my travels in 2008 I began wondering why on Earth my tripod was so big. The thing was full of negative space and knobs, and I felt like something designed for portability could do much better,” Peak Design CEO, Peter Dering. During the campaign the new Peak Design Travel Tripod

Banff Bound & Other Updates from a Busy Week

I thought I’d just write a bit of a general post here so you guys know what I’ve been up to. Since wrapping up the 5DayDeal I took a few days off work and then I’ve been hard at work preparing for a re-design of my Shutter Muse website. I’ll shortly be launching my new Photo Mechanic video course for sale on that site, but before I do that, we needed to implement some new systems to allow people to securely log in and watch the 60+ course videos without needing to download them all. I’ve also been talking to

Behind the Shot: Moraine Lake Sunrise

Moraine Lake is one of the most photographed lakes in the world, but this was actually my first time visiting it when I took this shot. Despite the remote looking landscape, there’s easy vehicle access in the summer months, and that means that it’s teeming with people during the day. There are nice shots to be had at night and in the evening, but sunrise is the quietest time, and you get to watch the first light of the day creep its way along the famous peaks at the far end of the lake. Banff Aurora Borealis

Behind the Shot: Aurora Insanity in Banff

Every photographer wants a shot at shooting the Northern Lights at some point, and this was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. It was taken at Vermillion Lakes in Banff, Alberta, Canada. A G3 geomagnetic storm rolled in on a night with a clear sky and a new moon that was setting early. You can’t hope for better conditions than that, for them all to align like that is a real rarity and I heard several comments from locals that this was the best storm they had seen in decades. Talk about being in the right place at

Behind the Shot: Wise Wildlife Photography Backgrounds

This photo was taken in Jasper National Park, Alberta. Jasper has an abundance of wildlife and you often come across things while you’re just driving from A to B, as was the case with this bighorn sheep on the side of the highway.  Now, shooting things on the side of the highway is far from ideal, but I’m not one to pass up a good opportunity when I see one coming my way. This guy was still a little ways up the road from me but was making a pretty good pace in my direction. Rather than drive straight up

Gear Check: Peak Design Cuff

This week I thought I’d introduce you guys to a handy little wrist strap called the Cuff, from Peak Design.  I have quite a few of these attached to smaller pieces of gear like my Sony RX100 MkIV and my Sony RX10 MkII, but they are also great to keep in your camera bag for larger DSLRs when you need something lightweight and a bit more discreet.  They use the usual quick release system from all of Peak Design’s straps, so it’s easy to swap things around and use a bigger strap when necessary. At only $20, it also makes
