Comparing Canon’s 300mm f2.8 Ls – MKI Vs MKII

I’m a big fan of the original Canon 300mm f2.8 L IS, it has served me well from covers to ads I’ve packed this thing around the world with me shooting up mountains and around race tracks with frankly stunning results.  I’ve never once caught myself wishing for anything more from the lens, I even shoot it regularly with extenders and produce more than useable images.  When Canon announced its replacement last year I wondered how much of an improvement they could really make.  In reading the various press releases for all of Canon’s new Super Telephotos it became clear

Canon Launches Entry Level Full Frame Camera – EOS 6D

Hot on the heals of Nikons D600 announcement last week, Canon has joined the cheaper full frame party with the new EOS 6D.  I wrote an article last month in which I made some guesses about Canon’s long terms plans….. this announcement fits in my theory pretty nicely and Canon are even further along in this plan than I had suspected.  Rumors of this camera were kept quite tight until the last few days so I think Canon has been plugging their leaky ship a little bit more. The question now will be ‘ is there going to be a 7D

Canon 6D Vs. Nikon D600 – Full Frame Wars

The full frame wars are hotting up and what used to be a feature confined to the pro marketplace has now found its way into the prosumer marketplace simultaneously from the top two manufacturers.  The high cost of CMOS sensor production was the catalyst for ‘crop’ frame APS-C cameras but now that these costs have reduced we can finally get back to the way things are meant to be, the way they always were with film cameras and a 35mm film.  This is an exciting time in the industry and I’m happy to say that both Canon and Nikon appear

First Canon 24-70 f2.8 II Reviews Coming In

I have this lens on order myself and intend to do a full review as soon as I get it. Unfortunately there are so far no signs of it coming to Canada. In fact a Canon rep even said he’s ‘not expecting it this month’ which is somewhat worrying as B&H is expecting to begin shipping theirs next week. I have to buy mine in Canada to take advantage of my CPS discount otherwise I would have just gone with B&H. video via CanonRumors

Canon Expands Cinema EOS Lineup With The New C100

Back in November last year I interviewed one of Canon’s product developers Eric Allen who worked on the C300 Cinema camera.  At the time I asked him if this was the bridge camera between the DSLR world and a professional camera system or whether that mantle was being assumed by the 4k DSLR that is also being released shortly.  Eric replied definitively that the 4K DSLR was a different thing entirely, leading us to assume that there would soon be a camera that more closely bridged that gap that now exists between the DSLRs and the C300.  That time is now, and the camera is the new C100.

Canon 40mm f2.8 STM Firmware Update

Firmware Version 1.2.0 addresses the following phenomenon 1. If pressure is applied to the lens barrel while the lens is mounted to the camera (pressure can be applied even while attaching the lens cap or while carrying the camera with the lens attached in a bag), the autofocusing function of the lens may stop working. A Canon EOS 1D X, 5D III (at v1.1.3 or later) or a Rebel T4i/650D is needed to install the upgrade. Alternatively, the lens can be sent to Canon Service to have the firmware upgrade installed. Canon 40mm f2.8 STM Product Advisory

Canon have posted a product advisory relating to the excellent little 40mm f2.8 STM.  It doesn’t seem to affect all the 40mm STM lenses though as I was anable to get my copy to produce the documented issue. To Users of the EF40mm f/2.8 STM Interchangeable Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras Thank you for using Canon products. It has been confirmed that the autofocusing function of the EF40mm f/2.8 STM lens, which was released in June 2012, may not operate correctly. The details of this phenomenon are described below. Canon 7D Firmware Version 2 Is Here – BIG Updates

You can finally download the previously announced V2 firmware for the Canon 7D HERE from Canon. The press release below walks you through all the changes and if you are a 7D shooter then you are going to be feeling pretty good about now.  There are a lot of improvements and to me it doesn’t seem like this would be something that Canon would be doing if there was a 7D MKIII just around the corner. Canon Makes Mirrorless Official – EOS M

Canon’s ship is typically a leaky one so we’ve had full specs and photos of this camera for a few days now.  Today though Canon officially launched their EOS-M mirrorless camera platform. Canon are last to the mirrorless market amongst the big players and on paper they have come out with an impressive package.  Most noticeably, the camera is TINY.  It is actually smaller than the Panasonic GF5 Mirco Fourthirds camera but critically it packs a full APS-C sized sensor and not a smaller M 4/3 one.  An 18MP APS-C sensor no less. The camera will begin shipping with either

Canon’s Mirrorless Camera Leaked – EOS M

Canon are finally making the jump into the mirrorless market and the first images of the first camera, expected to be officially launched on Sunday night, have leaked onto the internet via DigicameInfo and Canon Rumors.  Details are relatively thin on the ground at the moment but what is clear is that this camera has a pretty big sensor (probably APS-C) and the camera itself  is TINY.  We’re talking the size of a G1 X here.  It will also ship with a 22mm f2.0 lens which would be close to a 35mm equivalent if the sensor is indeed APS-C.  What
