When I first started to write this blog I included posts about my photography work, mixed in with gear reviews and industry news.  Eventually I decided that I needed to separate these two things so I started www.TheSkiPhotographer.com as a place to keep info about my ski photography work which takes up the majority of my shooting time.  Since then I haven’t really shared any of my work on this blog apart from the odd technique related post.  Today though I’d like to break that habit because I’m proud to be able to say that I have the #1 rated photo on the popular photography website 500PX.  I’ve been a fan of this site since it’s launch and it never ceases to amaze me how much incredible photography there is out there in the world.  To have the #1 photo is a proud moment for me, a real honor.  I’ve been amazed at the response I’ve had this morning from the media as well.  500PX is doing a lot right!  Newspapers and news agencies from around the world have contacted me this morning looking to showcase the image and the rest of my winter work.  It’s really quite incredible!

We’d been looking for a spot to build some consecutive jumps for a few weeks and when the opportunity finally presented itself we only had a few minutes of light left in the day.  As you can see in the image there is no direct light left!  The sun had just settled behind the mountains and time was running out.  This was Sammy’s first hit on the jumps and YES this was all shot in one go.  I put the Canon 1dMK4 on JPEG mode to get more shots before the buffer filled up and I literally just let it rip!  There was just enough shots in the buffer though.  This was shot with the Canon 70-300 L IS lens that I used so much last winter with great success.

As a photographer there is very little that is more satisfying than walking into your local grocery store and seeing one of your images adorn the cover of your favorite ski magazine. When the issue in question is also the special 10th anniversary edition of the magazine it is even better!

This photo of Dane Tudor was shot in Haines, Alaska while I was up there last spring time shooting alongside the Poorboyz Productions crew. You can read all about my trip in this post HERE. The line that Dane is skiing was one that he had his eye on for a couple of weeks and it’s actually called “Too Short”. We’d scoped it out and taken photos of it from the heli a couple of times and as we past the time waiting for weather to clear in our hotel room Dane kept returning to the same photo over and over again, studying every detail and every angle and even marking his planned route down it. As with everything in Alaska though you have to be patient and wait for the conditions to be absolutely perfect. That means weather and snow and further still, snowpack stability. This particular line only gets a small amount of side lighting right at the end of the day so we needed a full clear day where no clouds rolled in. After 10 days of patchy conditions and prolonged down time we finally caught a break and Dane eased his way into this line. The snow that he found there was about the deepest we had seen during out time in Haines!

The other thing that gets me stoked about this shot is that Dane and I have been working together now for just over three years since before he really started to come into the limelight. Dane’s career has taken off over the last two years picking up Powder Magazine award for breakthrough performance of the year in 2010, ESPN performer of the year at the end of 2010 and Newschoolers best male performer too in 2009. Dane and I have a great partnership going on and last year saw us travel to Japan and Alaska together. Over the last few years since we met we have created several Salomon ads for their campaigns and had plenty of photos published in magazines all around the world. The one thing that eluded us to this point was a cover. This is Dane’s first cover and I’m glad that I got to be the one to shoot it. I’m sure there is a lot more to come from this partnership in the future and I’m excited to see where else in the world it’s going to take us.

I buy all of my photography gear from the guys at B&H Photo.

Before the 2010 Olympics kicked off in my home town of Whistler, BC, I was commissioned by the local arts council to produce a slideshow of some of my skiing images. The slideshow was played on TVs and giant screens around the Olympics during the breaks between events.  Check it out below and click through to Vimeo if you want to watch it in HD.

A couple of months ago I was interviewed by a writer from the UpDown Magazine.  A Canadian magazine available in Montreal,Vancouver, Toronto and Calgary areas that explores the arts and culture of life on the snow.

These were the photos that were also featured in the magazine:

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of receiving an invite to take part in this winter’s DEEP WINTER photo challenge, presented by Arcteryx in my home town of Whistler in British Columbia.

Myself and three other professional snow photographers will battle the elements and storms of the West coast for three days in January to put together a slide show of images to display to a crowd of 2000 people at the Chateau in Whistler.

For the last couple of years, this competition has been blessed with deep powder and stormy days.  With a bit of luck we will have the same this year and it should lead to some great shots!

Ski And Snow is the largest snow sports magazine in the southern hemisphere and this winter then ran an 8 page article and photo gallery about me and my photography.  Check it out!  I’m stoked and obviously very flattered, it looked fantastic.  As an added bonus I also had the cover of the very same issue with a shot of Jossi Wells at Snowpark in New Zealand.
