It’s not all that often that I feel compelled to write about something based on a rumor but this warrants further discussion for two reasons.  Firstly the source has been remarkably reliable in the past and secondly, what they are rumoring is a real game changer.  Sony Alpha Rumors is reporting that Sony’s next NEX cameras will feature support for apps, and an internet connection.  In my opinion this has been a long time coming.  Think of how successful photography apps have been on the iPhone.  Now imagine if that was coupled to a camera that actually had some power and real quality ?  An internet connection that allowed you to apply filters make edits and post images to social media right from the camera?

People are continually dissatisfied with certain UI elements of the cameras they purchase, or the lack of a particular feature.  For example, it boggles my mind that all DSLRs don’t include detailed timelapse functionality.  Why not ?  It’s a simple, simple software code to achieve this sort of thing.  A camera app store would allow developers to create the things we wish our cameras had.  Hopefully Sony would release a dev kit and API for third parties to develop for the camera, and not just make people pay for their own Sony apps.

Canon are finally making the jump into the mirrorless market and the first images of the first camera, expected to be officially launched on Sunday night, have leaked onto the internet via DigicameInfo and Canon Rumors.  Details are relatively thin on the ground at the moment but what is clear is that this camera has a pretty big sensor (probably APS-C) and the camera itself  is TINY.  We’re talking the size of a G1 X here.  It will also ship with a 22mm f2.0 lens which would be close to a 35mm equivalent if the sensor is indeed APS-C.  What an intriguing prospect such a camera would be!  How would Canon protect sale of their Rebel line of cameras if they both have the same sensor size the the EF-M camera is physically smaller ?

Should Micro 4/3 manufacturers be concerned ?  I would think so yes!  This camera appears to be as small, if not smaller than the smallest of M 4/3 cameras, yet it probably packs a much bigger sensor and gives people access to the enormous range of Canon EF lenses (using an EF-M to EF adapter).

Did I say this thing was small ?!!?

Less than a month now until Canon make their ‘Historical Announcement” in Hollywood.  I’ve received an invitation myself but unfortunately can’t attend. The location of the event clearly signifies a video announcement and NOT a photographic one.  Those of you who are eagerly awaiting a Canon 5dMK3 can take a seat, this is NOT going to appear on this date.

It’s fairly safe to say that we are going to see a large sensor, interchangeable lens video camera.  Canon have taken their time over this product so we ought to see something pretty special here.  The launch of the 5dMK2 nearly three years ago was the catalyst for a lot of changes in the film industry but Canon seemingly took their time with the next step.  The guys over on the Red Center podcast are reporting that 6 or so of these cameras are out in the filed with DPs right now shooting test footage for the demo reels.  ‘Alexa like’ quality was a phrase that was quoted…. but obviously that is handed down information so we’ll have to wait a little on that one.

The big question is where will Canon position this new camera in the market ?  It’s certain that this will not be a consumer product by any stretch of the imagination.  I would expect at least $10,o00 for the body only, which would put it up against the Sony F3.  I don’t think Canon are looking for a fight with the Sony FS100 or Panasonic AF100.  Their DSLR’s are still holding their own in that fight….  There has been a lot of speculation about this product coming in 2 distinct versions and that makes sense given Canon’s current video lineup.  XF100 and 105 , XF300 and 305.  The main differences on those cameras has been connectivity.  I wouldn’t be surprised to see 2 cameras on Nov. 3rd at $12,000 and $15,000.

It’s also pretty certain that the camera will have ability to use PL mount lenses.  A necessity if you are targeting that segment of the market.  The thing is, a Canon camera without ability to use EF lenses would be very odd, so I’d also expect to see some sort of adapter or changeable mount.  Given the popularity of the EF mount for the RED Epic it would be a mistake to not offer EF lenses on these cameras.

The last couple of years has also seen the beginnings of the shift to 4k as a new standard resolution.  Jim Jannard from RED has declared 1080p as dead , but many TV shows and documentaries seem quite happy to continue using it with cameras like the Arri Alexa and Sony F3.  Which way will Canon go ?  If they enter with the pricing I expect them to then they have no need to go with 4k because currently nobody else offers it anyway.  I’ve yet to see something that can handle the data rates of 4k recording at a reasonable price but the unknown factor here is the RED Scarlet.  RED have announced that they are going to go head to head with Canon and launch the Scarlet on November 3rd as well.  Given Jim’s previous rants about the death of anything below 4k, it would be very odd to see a Scarlet at less than 4k.  That said, if anyone is going to back pedal on something like this, I would put Jim Jannard as the man to do it.  My gut says that Scarlet will be 4 though, and about $15000.  Canon will go for on board 2k recording that will use their 50Mbps MPEG-2 codec that was launched with the XF305.  The higher priced variant will allow for 4k out through HD-SDI, giving an upgrade path when 4k recorders come on the market.

What about lenses ?   Not a huge amount of information out there about this but it would make sense to see some compact cine lenses to launch alongside the camera.  They wouldn’t make a pro camera and force people to use the inadequate focus rings on the EF lenses with no manual iris control.  Obviously there are plenty of PL lenses out there already but it would be a missed opportunity if they didn’t make two or three compact zoom lenses like a 16-50 and  24-100.  Again, no real idea on this one other than I can’t imagine they wouldn’t have any lenses on the camera in all the press photos !  Plus they’ll want to package up a ‘kit’ for sale.  An offside possibility is that they will finally reveal the new EF 24-70 and that it will have IS.  In that scenario I can seen them trying to sell that lens as a ‘perfect for video’ sort of lens.

I’m really looking forward to finding out more about this camera and you can bet that I’ll be live blogging that day as Canon and RED announce their wares…..

I thought this was kind of interesting.  Getty sports photographer Clive Rose tweeted yesterday that he was : “Waiting outside #Canon to get a preview of some new tech.”

Hmmm, I wander what it could be ?  If I had to guess I’d say that it was to take a look at one of Canon’s yet to be released super telephoto lenses like the 500mm MKII or 600mm MKII, perhaps the 200-400 f4 L.  Possible that it was a camera, but there haven’t been any recent solid indications of a new camera this year whereas the super telephoto lenses are scheduled to be released before the end of the year.  The 200-400 still hasn’t had it’s formal announcement though, only an announcement of it’s development so I’d expect to see that sometime fairly soon.

Getty images sport’s photographers are amongst the best in the world and it’s a known fact that Canon and Nikon seek their opinions on various aspects of new products and often lend them new equipment for testing prior to the official launch.  I follow a number of Getty’s top shooters on Twitter and an interesting conversation popped up today between a few of them.  Richard Heathcote has been lent one of Canon’s new 400mm f2.8 MKII lenses to try out.  Check out his photo of it below which reveals a new style hard case and new style of lens cap for the upcoming MKII super tele lenses from Canon.  Richard even confirms on his twitter account that he used a pre-production version of the 400mm lens last year.

The interesting part of the conversation comes when fellow Getty sports photographer, Clive Mason, who is also a Canon shooter, chimes in to ask his colleague if he was using the 400mm on a MKIV or a MKV for a recent soccer game at Arsenal…… It seems that Clive Mason has recently switched back from Nikon to Canon.  I wander if there was a particular reason for the switch?  Clive is one of Getty’s top sports photographers so I’d wager he has tested pre-production equipment from Canon in the past.  Could we see a Canon 1dMKV in August ?  Perhaps a full frame sports camera?

Check out my review of the new Canon 8-15 f4 L Fisheye Zoom lens !

Around this time of year he rumor mills really start to turn the greasy wheels.  July, August and September are often months that see the key players in the industry announce new products either for immediate delivery, or increasingly in recent years , for deliver before Christmas.  In the last few years a wealth of websites have cropped up to deal with rumors for specific camera brands.  A few of these sites have good track records in tracking down new information long before anything official is released by the manufacturers.  Some of the other sites……. well they don’t have the best of luck.  Often there are snippets of correct information but it’s muddled in amongst bogus specs and rarely are things correct many months out.  Once things get close to an official announcement the rumors start to get a closer to the real deal.

I’m sure we are going to see weekly updates on these sites with supposed specs on new gear, one thing for certain though is that Sony, Nikon and Canon can be expected to make some major announcement in this time frame.

Sony looks set to bring an A77 to the market in July featuring their pellicule mirror technology to an APS-C camera with some decent specs to sit above their A55.

Nikon will be replacing the D3 and the D700 at some point.  It seems likely that at least one of these will be in August.  Before the Pixiq tradeshow was cancelled, Nikon and Canon were probably planning on releasing things at that show.

You guys know that for me it’s the Canon gear that I’m most interested in.  The website Canon Rumors has had so many conflicting reports over the months it’s hard to make sense of it.  We will certainly see an official release of the 200-400 f4 L IS which was announced as in development some months ago.  We have also been waiting for an eternity for a 24-70 f2.8 replacement.  Its been reported that there are several patents and test versions out there, some with IS and some without.  I’d say this one will finally come alongside some sort of 1dsMKIII replacement.  There has also been some reports that the 1d and 1ds line will be merged.  Not sure about that one!  And of course it’s about time for a 5dMKIII too.  On top of that there has been rumors of a 35mm f1.4 II and the much needed 50mm f1.4 II.  My bet would be on the 35mm to come first. Last week I went through 10 new years resolutions for 2011 and today I want to put down some predictions for how 2011 will shape up.  I haven’t done this before, but if nothing else it’ll be fun to look back on in a years time!  None of this stuff is based on any secret inside sources that I have , just pure conjecture based on readily available information and my knowledge of the industry.

Nikon

Nikon will certainly release a mirroless interchangeable lens camera sometime in Q2 or Q3 this year.  We have seen many patents filed for such a system by Nikon (see image below) and DSLR Magazine has just published a speculative article about it themselves. Print magazines tend to stay clear of conjecture unless it is from a VERY good source and these guys have a good track record.  Interestingly they claim that the Nikon EVIL camera will be “more professional” than other current EVIL cameras.  I hope this turns out to be true because so far I have not been tempted to buy any of the m 4/3 cameras or other such EVIL options.  Continue reading »
