I don’t generally bother posting news about point and shoot cameras on my blog but the blog is here for me to showcase things that interest me and this is pretty cool sounding little camera.  I used to own a waterproof Olympus camera and it was great fun on holidays in the ocean and days at the beach.  The camera goes a little further and claims to be cold proof so that’s more up my alley for my winter work !  It looks as though this wasn’t supposed to be released until tonight at midnight but the press release was on Nikon’s website so fair game !

Main specs:

  • Waterproof down to 33-feet
  • Shockproof up to 5-feet
  • Temp proof down to 14 degrees F
  • Oversized buttons for gloves
  • 5X wide angle zoom lens
  • E-compass
  • GPS for geo tagging, but there will be basic maps as well.

A new feature called SWING CONTROL – shake the camera in a certain way to change functions (portrait to landscape) w/o going into the menu

1080p/30 and 720p/60 HD video recording (60fps = slo motion) with a mini HDMI out

Last week I went through 10 new years resolutions for 2011 and today I want to put down some predictions for how 2011 will shape up.  I haven’t done this before, but if nothing else it’ll be fun to look back on in a years time!  None of this stuff is based on any secret inside sources that I have , just pure conjecture based on readily available information and my knowledge of the industry.

Nikon will certainly release a mirroless interchangeable lens camera sometime in Q2 or Q3 this year.  We have seen many patents filed for such a system by Nikon (see image below) and DSLR Magazine has just published a speculative article about it themselves. Print magazines tend to stay clear of conjecture unless it is from a VERY good source and these guys have a good track record.  Interestingly they claim that the Nikon EVIL camera will be “more professional” than other current EVIL cameras.  I hope this turns out to be true because so far I have not been tempted to buy any of the m 4/3 cameras or other such EVIL options.  Continue reading »

Hot on the heels of Canon’s 60D announcement, Nikon has today revealed the successor to the popular D90 consumer DSLR, the D7000. Both of these cameras have made some considerable improvements on their predecessors and consumers these days are really starting to see higher end features trickle down into the lower end bodies. Last week I wrote an article comparing the Canon 7d with the 60D which was very popular and designed to give the Canon shooters a few pointers as to which might be the best camera for them. This week it’s going to be a Nikon Vs. Canon battle for those people who have yet to pick a side. Lots of things to think about here because whilst most expected the D7000 to go head to head with the 60D, Nikon came out swinging and have incorporated a few features that in some cases put it closer to the 7D.
