Heading South to Get Wet

Today I’m packing my bags to fly south to Vancouver from the Yukon. I’ll spend a couple of days running some errands around the city and catching up with some friends and then I’m taking a series of three different ferries to end up on Hornby Island where I’ll be freediving with sea lions for a few days. Hornby Island is a small island in the Straight of Georgia, between Vancouver Island and the British Columbian mainland. I have been making regular visits to Vancouver Island for a while now and it’s easily one of my favourite wildlife photography destinations. …

I’m Back! Rainforests, boats, bears, whales…

I must apologize that things went a little quiet for a few weeks around here while I’ve been busy on the road in a couple of locations around British Columbia. The first trip was to photograph the temperate rainforests of the Sunshine Coast, and a second longer trip saw me based in Tofino for a few weeks while I tracked down the incredible wildlife that lives in that areas. Just to give you an idea, in a single day I photographed black bears, killer whales (mother and son, transients), grey whales and a grey whale calf, eagles, harbour seals, stellar …

New Photos from Floe Lake in Kootenay National Park

I recently took a quick trip over to Kootenay Naitonal Park on the Alberta/BC border to photograph the golden larch trees beneath the famous Grand Wall on the edge of Floe Lake. I’ve wanted to check this place out for some time, and luckily I had a small opening in my schedule at just the right time. GALLERY –>> You can check out my photos from Floe Lake here.

Back From Banff

I spent much of the last week exploring the Canadian Rockies around Banff and Jasper National Parks. Whilst the wildlife encounters I was hoping for didn’t really materialize, I did get some excellent landscape photography opportunities along the Icefields Parkway, and also in the Kananaskis Valley which is an area that I think gets photographically overlooked by a lot of photographers. You can read here about a few new products that I took with me for testing along the route. I’ll be sharing some new landscape images very shortly in the Behind the Shot series, but for now, I thought …

Aerial Photography Timelapse

A few weeks ago I took an awesome flight with the folks from Sea To Sky Air in Squamish, BC.  The mission was to photography two prominent local mountains: Black Tusk in Whistler, and Sky Pilot in Squamish. I used a GoPro Hero 4 Black strapped to the wing of the plane to record a timelapse of the flight, and then I edited a selection of the final processed images into the timelapse at the relevant points in the video.  I’m calling it a slidelapse (slideshow+timelapse). The whole thing was edited together in Final Cut Pro X, and uploaded in …

Notes from a month on the road

Having recently spent a month away from my home and office, I thought I’d write down a few notes about photography “on the road”. That kind of time away from usual surroundings is a surefire way to reveal weaknesses in workflow and gear, and a few things stood out to me so I thought I’d share them.

Le Mans 24 Hours – 2012 – What worked & what didn’t ?

Whenever I set out on a lengthy photography trip there are always many considerations when it comes to packing. Every trip requires something slightly different and my recent trip to Europe was no different. This trip was firstly to shoot the 24 Hours of Le Mans, a motorsports event in France. I shot this race last year as well and wrote an extensive report on it at the time, along with a short video about the gear that I packed for that trip. Last year the sole purpose of my trip was to shoot the race, but this year my …

I’m Back!

Hey guys, I just wanted to post a quick note to say that normal business will be resuming this week on the blog. For the last couple of months I have had more work on my plate than any time in my career. Yes, you see I am actually a working photographer ! I’ve been shooting commercial images, catalog images, traveling to a photo shoot in Austria and producing a video shoot for a company from China all in the last few weeks. There is a lot to catch up on in the next few weeks so you can expect …

Where Have I Been !? Petit Le Mans.

Hey guys, sorry for the lack of posting last week!  I have been away shooting another big motorsports event.  My post earlier in the year about my trip to France to shoot the Le Mans 24 Hours was very popular.  Well this time I was shooting an event called the Petit Le Mans, a 10 hour race featuring the same cars. Update: Unfortunately this gallery is no longer available.

Shooting Les 24 Heures Du Mans 2011

In June 2011 I got to fulfill a lifelong ambition and head to France to shoot the worlds greatest motor race, the 24 hours of Le Mans.  I’ve followed many forms of motorsports since I was young and before I discovered photography I was all set to work in the industry with an engineering degree.  Having attended the race at Le Mans in a spectating capacity several times I’ve always wanted to be on the other side of the fence with my camera and 2011 was my opportunity.  This race is unlike any other that I have ever been to …

World cup bobsled in my home town

I don’t often get to post photos of what I’m currently shooting because much of it has to stay under wraps until the clients have used them in the magazines or adverts. This weekend though I have my photojournalism hat on in my home town of Whistler, BC. The bobsled and skeleton world cup is here for the first round of the winter season at the Whistler Sliding Center that hosted the event for the 2010 Winter Olympics. Here is a photo from lasts nights 2-man bobsled event. Canada 1 bob piloted by Lyndon Rush grabbed joint second place in …

So you want to go and shoot skiing in Alaska ……..?

100321_9918_dancarr

I’m becoming very very familiar with the interior of the hotel room in which I’m currently sitting. The front door is a portal to the 1970s, wood paneled walls that creak in the night, vinyl flooring and a selection of electrical appliances that would make an interesting museum exhibit. They call it the “slow roast” here in Haines, Alaska, and nobody knows how long it will last. When I first arrived in town 2 weeks ago the skies were blue for a couple of days and we got right into it. But since then our fortune has changed. We have flown for 1 run in the last 7 days….. and its beginning to drive us insane. The weather patterns seem totally unpredictable, even by the most seasoned of Alaskan forecasters. We have given up even checking on them, the only way to go is to look out of the window.
