David McLain & Jerome Thelia On The Calling and Sony’s A99

Whilst attending PhotoPlus Expo recently I had the chance to sit down with National Geographic photographer David McLain and his business partner Jerome Thelia to talk about their recent short The Calling which was shot entirely with Sony’s new full frame DSLR, the A99. Please head on over to ProPhoto Coalition to read that one.  This video is an absolute MUST SEE.  Simply gorgeous !  The A99 looks to me to be the new DSLR video king.

Manfrotto Deluxe HDSLR Remote Review

At NAB this year Manfrotto launched a couple of interesting new products to compliment their SYMPLA rig lineup, the Deluxe HDSLR Remote and the Clamp On HDSLR Remote.  My interest piqued because there are relatively few other options out there that can accomplish the same thing and none from a company with Manfrotto’s experience.  So what are we talking about here ?  We’re talking remote control of your Canon HDSLR when shooting video.  Not just simple record Start/Stop functionality but control of aperture, shutter speed, ISO and even focus.  Sounds pretty cool right ?  I immediately contacted my friends at

Two New Canon Lenses Leaked! 35mm f2 & 24-70 f4 IS

Well here’s a turn up for the books.  Two Canon lenses leaked onto the net today via Digicame-info.  A 35mm f2.0 and a 24-70 f4 L IS.  The 35mm will be an interesting lens, much smaller than the f1.4 L bigger brother and if it follows the same optical quality of recent 24mm and 28mm lenses it should be very nice. Now the 24-70 though….. this is just an odd lens to me!  Seems like a replacement to the 24-105, but why oh why would they lower the range like that ?!!  It’s also going to have recent purchasers of

Think Tank Launches New Retrospective 40 & 50

I’m a big fan of the Retrospective series from Think Tank.  I have a retro 10 myself for using around the city when I just need a body and a couple of lenses.  It’s also my ‘vacation bag’ for going on the plane with me.  This month Think Tank has launched larger versions of the bag , the 40 & 50 which are capable of holding 13″ or 15″ laptops.  If you’re looking for a more covert bag to carry camera gear and a laptop then definitely take a look at these.  The materials that they use are bomb proof

Use Your DSLR On A 4×5 Camera

Multistitch is another interesting product I came across at PhotoPlus Expo last week.  It allows you to mount your regular DSLR onto a 4×5 view camera to generate images with nearly four times the resolution of the DSLR.  The product is a machined metal plate with a mount on it that clips onto the back of your view camera.  Now obviously your 35mm DSLR sensor won’t cover the full 4×5 view with one shot so the plate is designed that you put it on and take a shot, then you rotate it 90 degrees and take a second shot.  Next
