Thats interesting , not something i've heard myself. I assume you are talking about the f4.5-5.6 one and not the diffractive optics lens?

I've heard people call the Canon 70-300 IS a "hidden L lens"... no experience myself but it sounds on par with the Nikon 70-300...

Absolutely, its worth a try. The good thing is with newer cameras you can stop the lens down pretty far and still maintain good shutter speed with use of high ISO. I shot in AK with the teleconverters and ISO 800 on a sunny day. Previously you would not dream of using such high ISO on a sunny day but the images are so clean on 1dmkIV that you can shoot like that and then get f10 and 1/1600 .

Thanks Dan. I'm hoping I can pick up a used 1.4 or 1.7 on cheap before next winter so I can give it a go and it's no big loss if it doesn't work out. From a weight/convenience point of view it's pretty appealing.

I've never had good success with it Lorne. 2x TC , dont even bother trying IMO. 1.4x.....well maybe at a pinch. I guess it would depend on your intended output for the shots. Web use would probably be fine but you probably wouldn't want to try it for a client that's paying you well. The key if you do it is to stop it down to f8 or smaller. That makes a huge difference but if you find yourself needing 300mm range a lot then its far better to just get something like the 300mm f4 which can be had second hand for around $1000 anyway.

What are your thoughts on using a 1.4 or 1.7x converter with a 70-200/2.8 Dan?
