Thanks Dan,

That makes sense to me plus I just found a shop here in Calgary that rents the ranger kit so I always have that option when I want a little more power.

I also noticed on your site that Nikon is making a 16-35mm f4. I wish I had known that before I got my 17-35mm f2.8. Awesome lens but a tank to carry.

Hi Lee,

If you are just starting from scratch I would get the Nikon strobes. But also be aware that you dont need sb 900s unless you really want to drop in on that price. I use a bunch of SB 80DXs and they are awesome. Multiple small flashes are far more versatile and a much better way to learn how to shoot with Flash.

The ranger is nice, but overkill in many situations. My first 2 years i just shot with 3 small strobes and they were awesome.

Hi Dan, I have been rolling around the idea of investing in some strobes for ski and snowboard photography but am unable to decide what to get.

I keep waffling between an elinchrom ranger rx A head system or a bunch of sb-900's (nikon shooter). I like the ability of the ranger to over power the sun and it's sick flash duration but it's only one light where multiple sb's gives me the ability to light from different angles.

What do you suggest? I don't have any flashes other than the pop up on my D700 so I'm starting from scratch.

Miles,

Thanks for reading my blog!

When i first started out, it really was just me combining my hobbies of skiing and photography. For a little more info, I did an interview for the freeskiing website Newschoolers and you can download a PDF of the interview HERE

As you say, taking your camera with you is the first step, there is no substitute for experience. I never went to school for photography but I spent a lot of time practicing with my friends in the mountains. If you have any more questions feel free to ask.

I just wanted to comment and say that as a teen looking at this I dream/aspire to be able to do something like this when I grow up. Just curious, How did you end up starting up in this type of "gig?" I would love to hear what you did at the beginning to start thinking about how I could start a career. I already am an avid skier and was silly not to bring my camera out this season, but as I look at you photos and see who what opportunities and experiences you have gotten through photography I wish I had brought my camera out for some ski runs to gain some experience in the type of stuff you do.

Thank you so much for posting your work on the web!
