Thanks a bunch for the advice. I found you/it through F-Stop's reviews page while shopping for a snowboarding camera bag. I appreciate your advice and willingness to share. I'm not a pro shooter, but I really do like getting great shots of my friends on the slopes. We don't typically have a crew follow us around to take pictures of our slow funbox grinds and faceplants off of kickers. Thanks again!

If you are going to go lightweight then Carbon fiber is the way to go. The best value CF tripods are from Benro. I have one and it is doing pretty good after 4 years of travel.

If money is no object then take a look at the reallyrightstuff TVC-33 or TVC-24. They are the best of the best IMO. BUt you pay for it. Don't cheap out too much though or you will end up replacing it every year and it will just cost you more.

Any advice on what tripod is a good, lightweight one to bring into the back country? I would add that a split board is a handy compromise between skis and snowboard though you still often have to get out of it sometimes for shots. It's kind of random but I have a Loki jacket that had built-in gator and mittens the you can either use as mittens or leave just as almost a fingerless mittens. Hard to explain but worth checking out. I think I convinced a bunch of AP photog to try the jacket out at the Birds of Prey Ski Races.

good point you got there with the ambient light! anyways what i tried to say was that shooting in the pow without a strobe can be really hard. I have the wonderful opportunity to shoot with one of the best photographers while being part of his workshop (Scott Markewitz) the last two days we had gray foggy weather, but this leads to close ups, where you really have to pay attention to details! All Im saying is that you Dan got it spot on with using ambient light, i never thought it could make such a difference!

Zack , yes 95% of urban use strobes thats true but I certainly wouldnt say mags are mostly urban. I still stand by the list though. If you are just starting out, these are the things you need. There is no point jumping into having 5 strobes and 6 pocketwizards if you dont yet know how to take a photo and and use ambient light.

Doug, if you are on a budget jusmp no ebay and hunt down some Nikon SB-80DXs. Great value, reliable and fast flash duration. I have 4 of them and love them. As for PWs, plusII are fine, stay well away from the TT5 and TT1 , they SUCK.

While youre correct about big mountain riding, in magazines I'd say 95% of urban set ups use strobes, and magazines love urban set ups, as they usually dominate the magazine's photos
