I currently use that to store all my photos. I am currently looking at NAS setups and was recommended looking at the FreeNAS software though I would have to purchase some more drives. With photography I would say Redundancy is your best friend. People have been telling me that backing up to DVD is a bit meh because they have like a 5 year life span on the discs. Though I do need to figure out something soon.. Shooting in RAW + JPG the files tend to be a bit large. Think my RAW files are 15MB each?
